Breeding your mare can be incredibly rewarding, but it is not simply a matter of choosing a stallion, waiting eleven months and collecting a cute foal from the paddock.

You are making decisions about the mare’s health, the foal’s genetics, months of veterinary management, the risk of foaling complications and the future of a horse that may live for thirty years.

The right question is not only, “Can my mare get pregnant?”

It is:

Should this mare be bred, is this the right mating, and am I prepared for every outcome?

Quick Answer

Breed your mare only when she is physically and reproductively suitable, the proposed mating avoids preventable genetic disease, you have a clear purpose for the foal and you can fund routine care plus a genuine emergency.

A pre-breeding veterinary examination should come before selecting semen or paying a stud fee. Older, barren, previously injured or medically complicated mares may require more extensive investigation, including reproductive ultrasonography, cervical examination, culture, cytology or endometrial biopsy. If your main goal is simply to own another horse, buying or adopting an existing horse is usually more predictable, quicker and financially safer.

Why Do You Want to Breed Your Mare?

This is the first decision, and it should be answered honestly.

Possible goals include:

  • Producing a future riding or competition horse

  • Preserving a successful or important bloodline

  • Producing a foal for sale

  • Breeding for a recognised stud program

  • Producing a replacement for a particular discipline

  • Keeping a descendant of a much-loved mare

All of these can be valid reasons. However, affection for the mare does not guarantee that the foal will inherit her best characteristics.

The foal will not be a smaller copy of its dam. It receives genetics from both parents, and its eventual temperament, conformation, soundness and performance are also influenced by pregnancy, foaling, nutrition, handling, injury, training and plain genetic chance.

If your only answer is, “I would like another horse,” look at available young horses first. You may find exactly what you need without placing your mare through pregnancy and foaling.

What Does “Suitable for Breeding” Actually Mean?

The phrase “breed-worthy” can sound unnecessarily judgmental. Clinically, the question is whether breeding is likely to produce a healthy, useful foal without exposing the mare to an unreasonable or avoidable risk.

A suitable breeding mare should be assessed across several areas.

Area Questions to consider
General health Can she safely carry a pregnancy and recover from foaling?
Reproductive health Are her ovaries, uterus, cervix and reproductive anatomy functioning normally?
Genetics Could this mating produce an inherited disease?
Conformation Are there significant structural weaknesses likely to be passed on?
Soundness Is the underlying cause of any lameness heritable or likely to make pregnancy painful?
Temperament Is her behaviour safe, trainable and appropriate for the intended foal?
Performance Has she demonstrated qualities relevant to the breeding goal?
Practical future Is there a secure home and realistic purpose for the foal?

No mare is perfect, and breeding should not be limited only to elite competition horses.

The aim is to make a deliberate mating rather than reproducing a mare simply because she is available, retired or unable to continue her previous job.

What Should a Pre-Breeding Examination Include?

The examination should evaluate the whole mare, not only her ovaries.

A veterinary assessment may include:

  • General physical examination

  • Body condition and muscle mass

  • Heart and lung assessment

  • Lameness and pain evaluation

  • Hoof condition

  • Dental health

  • Current medications

  • Vaccination and disease history

  • Previous pregnancies and foaling complications

  • Previous breeding attempts

  • Perineal and vulvar conformation

  • Palpation and ultrasound of the ovaries and uterus

  • Vaginal and cervical examination

  • Uterine culture and cytology where indicated

  • Endometrial biopsy in selected mares

AAEP breeding terminology and the Merck Veterinary Manual describe evaluation of the ovaries, uterus, cervix, vagina, vestibule and perineum, commonly using rectal palpation, ultrasonography and visual examination of the vagina and cervix. (AAEP)

A young, healthy maiden mare with normal cycles and no concerning findings may not need every possible test. A barren mare, an older maiden, a mare with uterine fluid or a mare with previous reproductive problems deserves a much more comprehensive investigation. (Merck Veterinary Manual)

Culture and Cytology

A uterine culture identifies bacteria or fungi. Cytology shows whether inflammatory cells are present.

These tests are especially useful when the mare has:

  • Previously failed to conceive

  • Uterine fluid

  • Abnormal discharge

  • Poor reproductive conformation

  • A history of endometritis

  • Repeated early pregnancy loss

  • A history of difficult foaling

Culture should not be interpreted alone. Bacterial growth can occasionally reflect contamination, while inflammation can be present even when routine culture is negative. Endometritis is a major cause of reduced fertility in mares and may be infectious, inflammatory or associated with poor uterine clearance. (Merck Veterinary Manual)

Endometrial Biopsy

A biopsy samples the uterine lining and can help assess inflammation, fibrosis and the likelihood that the uterus can maintain a pregnancy.

It may be particularly useful in:

  • Older mares

  • Chronically barren mares

  • Repeat breeders

  • Mares with repeated pregnancy loss

  • Mares with persistent uterine fluid

  • Cases where previous treatment has failed

It does not tell you whether conception is impossible, but it can provide more realistic expectations before money is spent on expensive semen and repeated cycles.

Is My Mare Too Old to Breed?

There is no single birthday at which every mare becomes unsuitable.

A healthy 16-year-old mare with previous uncomplicated foalings may be a more straightforward candidate than a younger mare with chronic uterine disease. Conversely, a mare entering her late teens or twenties for her first pregnancy deserves careful assessment.

Advanced maternal age is associated with declining fertility, poorer oocyte quality and a greater risk of early pregnancy loss. Studies of aged mares have demonstrated changes in oocyte metabolism, chromosome organisation and embryo quality that help explain why fertility generally declines with age. (PMC)

Older Maiden Mares

An older maiden mare has never carried and delivered a foal.

She may still become pregnant, but several questions have never been tested:

  • Will her cervix relax and drain normally?

  • Can her uterus clear post-breeding fluid?

  • Can she maintain the pregnancy?

  • Will her reproductive tract accommodate delivery normally?

  • Does she have age-related oocyte decline?

  • Is there previously undetected uterine disease?

This does not mean older maidens should never be bred. It means the owner should expect more diagnostics, potentially more breeding cycles and a less predictable outcome.

Age should change the plan, not automatically make the decision.

Can a Mare With Lameness or Chronic Disease Be Bred?

Sometimes, but retirement from riding is not itself a reason to breed.

Ask why the mare is lame.

A traumatic injury that is fully stabilised and not considered heritable is different from:

  • Severe conformational weakness

  • Developmental orthopaedic disease

  • A known inherited disorder

  • Chronic pain that may worsen as pregnancy progresses

  • Severe arthritis that limits normal movement

  • Recurrent laminitis

  • Poor hoof quality associated with an inherited condition

The mare needs to remain comfortable while gaining pregnancy weight, getting up and down, foaling, nursing and protecting a young foal.

Chronic medical problems also require review. These may include:

  • Equine metabolic syndrome

  • Insulin dysregulation

  • PPID

  • Cardiac disease

  • Respiratory disease

  • Kidney or liver disease

  • Neurological disease

  • Chronic gastrointestinal disease

  • Recurrent laminitis

The current medication plan must also be reviewed. Do not stop essential medication simply because breeding is being considered.

In selected cases, embryo transfer allows a mare to produce a genetic offspring without carrying the pregnancy herself. It may be useful for performance mares and mares that should not undergo pregnancy, but it does not remove inherited disease from the mating or reverse age-related decline in oocyte quality. Should the Mare Have a Performance Record?

Not every worthwhile broodmare needs an elite competition record.

A mare may have value because of:

  • Proven performance

  • Excellent temperament

  • Strong conformation

  • Soundness and durability

  • Valuable pedigree

  • Proven offspring

  • Rare or important bloodlines

  • Suitability for a specific job

However, the breeding goal should match the evidence available.

If the foal is intended for high-level competition or resale, an unproven mare with an unproven family creates greater uncertainty. A famous stallion cannot reliably compensate for every weakness in the mare.

For a personal riding horse, temperament, soundness and trainability may matter far more than fashionable bloodlines.

The best mating is not the stallion with the most impressive advertisement. It is the mating most likely to produce the type of horse you genuinely need.

Genetic Testing Should Happen Before the Mating

Breed-specific genetic testing should be completed for both the mare and stallion where relevant.

Tests may screen for inherited conditions associated with particular breeds and bloodlines, including disorders affecting:

  • Muscles

  • Skin and connective tissue

  • The immune system

  • The nervous system

  • Skeletal development

  • Metabolism

  • Foal viability

A carrier horse may be completely healthy. The danger arises when two carriers of the same autosomal recessive disorder are bred together. In that type of mating, each pregnancy has a 25% probability of producing an affected foal. UC Davis provides this interpretation for disorders including HERDA, cerebellar abiotrophy, SCID, fragile foal syndrome and several other breed-associated conditions. Being a carrier does not automatically mean the horse must be removed from breeding. It means the mate must be chosen intelligently.

Testing should be used to protect foals while preserving genetic diversity, not simply to eliminate every carrier from a breed.

How Should You Choose the Stallion?

Start with the mare’s weaknesses, not the stallion’s promotional photographs.

Evaluate:

  • Genetic compatibility

  • Conformation

  • Size

  • Temperament

  • Soundness

  • Performance

  • Fertility

  • Previous offspring

  • Semen quality

  • Suitability for the intended discipline

  • Whether the stallion reliably improves the mare’s weaker areas

Be wary of selecting mainly for:

  • Coat colour

  • Height

  • Social media popularity

  • A single famous ancestor

  • One spectacular performance result

  • A low stud fee

Colour is easy to market. Correct limbs and a useful brain remain more helpful when the foal is four years old and has opinions.

Ask About Stallion Fertility

Before signing the breeding contract, ask:

  • What is the stallion’s pregnancy rate?

  • Is the semen fresh, cooled or frozen?

  • Has that batch of frozen semen produced pregnancies?

  • How many doses are included?

  • What happens if the mare does not conceive?

  • Are collection and shipping charges separate?

  • Is there a live-foal guarantee?

  • What reproductive disease testing has been completed?

  • What are the mare-substitution and rebreeding terms?

The veterinary management of a breeding stallion may include semen concentration, motility, morphology, cooling performance, freezing performance and testing for reproductive pathogens. (AAEP)

Infectious Disease and Transported Semen

Transported semen can spread reproductive pathogens when testing and biosecurity are inadequate.

Depending on the country, semen source and stallion status, your veterinarian may need to consider:

  • Equine viral arteritis

  • Contagious equine metritis

  • Other regulatory testing

  • Import documentation

  • Semen biosecurity

  • Isolation after breeding with virus-infective semen

AAEP recommends that unvaccinated breeding stallions be tested for evidence of equine arteritis virus exposure before initial EVA vaccination and provides specific precautions for transported semen. USDA regulations also require testing in designated CEM-risk circumstances. (AAEP)

Rules differ between countries. Imported semen should never be assumed safe merely because it arrived in an impressive container.

What Does Breeding a Mare Really Cost?

There is no honest universal price.

Costs vary dramatically with:

  • Country and region

  • Stallion

  • Breeding method

  • Mare fertility

  • Semen availability

  • Veterinary fees

  • Boarding

  • Transport

  • Pregnancy complications

  • Foaling complications

  • The health of the newborn foal

The stud fee is only the visible beginning.

Before Breeding

Budget for:

  • General examination

  • Reproductive examination

  • Ultrasound

  • Culture and cytology

  • Endometrial biopsy if required

  • Genetic testing

  • Infectious disease testing

  • Dental and farrier care

  • Vaccination updates

  • Nutrition review

During the Breeding Cycle

Owning the mare removes one line from the invoice. It does not make the foal free.

Which Breeding Method Is Best?

The right method depends on the mare, stallion, semen, location, breed-registry rules and budget.

Artificial insemination with fresh or cooled semen is generally the least complex assisted reproductive option. Embryo transfer and laboratory embryo production provide additional options for performance mares, older mares and selected fertility problems, but they require specialist facilities and considerably more planning. Check the relevant breed registry before committing. A foal produced by a method that cannot be registered may be a very expensive administrative surprise.

What Changes When Frozen Semen Is Used?

Frozen semen is not simply cooled semen that has been colder for longer.

After thawing, the fertile lifespan of sperm may be shorter, so ovulation timing often needs to be monitored closely. This can mean:

  • More frequent ultrasound examinations

  • Ovulation-inducing medication

  • Carefully timed insemination

  • Deep-horn insemination in selected cases

  • More intensive veterinary management

  • Higher costs per cycle

Ask how many insemination doses are included and whether the semen has previously produced pregnancies.

A beautifully bred frozen dose with poor post-thaw fertility can become an extremely expensive ice cube.

Pregnancy Is Not Eleven Months of Waiting

A positive pregnancy scan is only the first checkpoint.

Days 14 to 16

The first ultrasound is commonly performed around days 14 to 16.

This examination can:

  • Confirm pregnancy

  • Identify twins

  • Assess the uterus

  • Allow early twin management

  • Permit prompt rebreeding if the mare is not pregnant

Twin pregnancy is not a bonus in the mare. It carries a high risk of pregnancy loss, premature delivery and compromised foals. Twinning is recognised as the most common noninfectious cause of abortion in horses. (University of Minnesota Extension)

Around Days 24 to 25

An embryonic heartbeat can usually be identified, helping confirm early viability. (University of Minnesota Extension)

Around Days 30 to 35

A further examination confirms that the pregnancy is continuing and provides another opportunity to identify early loss or abnormalities. (University of Minnesota Extension)

Further examinations may be recommended according to:

  • Mare age

  • Previous pregnancy loss

  • Twin history

  • Placentitis risk

  • Uterine abnormalities

  • Vaginal discharge

  • Premature udder development

  • Breed or farm protocol

Skipping the early ultrasound because the mare “looks pregnant” is not sensible management. By the time a twin pregnancy is externally obvious, the opportunity for simple early intervention has long passed.

What Care Does a Pregnant Mare Need?

A pregnant mare needs a planned health program covering:

  • Appropriate forage and balanced nutrition

  • Body condition monitoring

  • Exercise and safe movement

  • Farrier care

  • Dental care

  • Vaccination

  • Parasite management

  • Biosecurity

  • Monitoring for placentitis and premature mammary development

  • A foaling facility and emergency plan

Pregnant mares should generally be kept away from high-turnover groups such as travelling competition horses and recently arrived horses. Separate equipment and careful biosecurity reduce exposure to infectious causes of abortion. (University of Minnesota Extension)

AAEP recommends vaccinating broodmares approximately four to six weeks before foaling to protect the mare and maximise antibody concentrations in colostrum. The exact vaccine program must reflect local disease risk, previous vaccination and product guidance. (AAEP)

Additional vaccines may be used at specific stages of pregnancy, including EHV-1 abortion vaccines or rotavirus vaccines where indicated. This should be planned with the attending veterinarian rather than copied from another farm’s calendar.

What Can Go Wrong?

Most well-managed mares deliver successfully, but breeding is never risk-free.

Failure to Conceive

The mare may fail to become pregnant because of:

  • Poor timing

  • Poor semen quality

  • Failure to ovulate

  • Endometritis

  • Poor uterine clearance

  • Cervical dysfunction

  • Oviductal problems

  • Age-related oocyte decline

  • Stallion fertility problems

More cycles mean more veterinary work, more semen and more cost.

Early Pregnancy Loss

Pregnancy may be lost because of:

  • Embryonic abnormalities

  • Poor oocyte quality

  • Uterine disease

  • Inflammation

  • Hormonal or systemic illness

  • Twin pregnancy

  • Placental abnormalities

Older mares have an increased risk of early loss, partly because advancing age affects oocyte and embryo quality. (PMC)

Placentitis and Abortion

Placentitis can threaten the pregnancy and may present with:

  • Premature udder development

  • Milk leakage

  • Vulvar discharge

  • Thickening or separation of placental structures on ultrasound

  • Premature delivery

Abortion may also result from infectious disease, twinning, umbilical cord abnormalities or fetal problems. (Merck Veterinary Manual)

Dystocia

Dystocia means difficult birth.

Most equine dystocias involve an abnormal position, posture or presentation of the foal. Once the water breaks, a normal delivery should progress rapidly. Failure to deliver within approximately 20 to 30 minutes demands urgent veterinary intervention because delays can quickly endanger both mare and foal. (Merck Veterinary Manual)

Retained Placenta

The placenta should normally be passed promptly after foaling.

Fetal membranes retained for three hours or longer need veterinary attention because complications can include metritis, endotoxaemia, peritonitis and laminitis. Advanced maternal age, dystocia, placentitis and previous retained placenta can increase concern. (Merck Veterinary Manual)

Postpartum Metritis

A mare with postpartum uterine infection may develop:

  • Fever

  • Depression

  • Poor appetite

  • Foul-smelling discharge

  • Reduced milk production

  • Colic

  • Laminitis

  • Septic shock

This is a medical emergency, not a routine post-foaling discharge. (Merck Veterinary Manual)

Newborn Foal Problems

The foal may require urgent treatment for:

  • Failure to stand or nurse

  • Failure of passive transfer

  • Sepsis

  • Neonatal encephalopathy

  • Prematurity

  • Meconium impaction

  • Rib fractures

  • Limb deformity

  • Congenital disease

  • Respiratory distress

  • Diarrhoea

A newborn should become progressively brighter and should stand and nurse within the first hours. Even apparently normal foals benefit from a veterinary examination and assessment of passive antibody transfer within the first day. (Merck Veterinary Manual)

How Risky Is Breeding Your Mare?

Lower Risk

The mare is:

  • Healthy and comfortable

  • In appropriate body condition

  • Reproductively normal

  • Free from concerning inherited disease combinations

  • Cycling normally

  • Not significantly advanced in age

  • Previously uncomplicated if she has foaled before

  • Being matched with a tested, fertile stallion

  • Supported by a realistic budget and emergency plan

What to do: proceed with a planned breeding program and routine veterinary monitoring.

Moderate Risk

The mare:

  • Is an older maiden

  • Has been barren for one season

  • Has mild reproductive conformation problems

  • Accumulates a small amount of post-breeding fluid

  • Has a controlled chronic medical condition

  • Will be bred using limited or expensive semen

  • Has incomplete reproductive history

What to do: complete a comprehensive breeding soundness examination and build a more detailed treatment, monitoring and financial plan.

High Risk

The mare has:

  • Repeated pregnancy loss

  • Significant uterine disease

  • Poor endometrial biopsy findings

  • Previous dystocia

  • Previous retained placenta

  • Significant cervical damage

  • Persistent uterine fluid

  • Severe lameness or chronic pain

  • Poorly controlled metabolic disease

  • Advanced age with declining fertility

  • A history of placentitis or high-risk pregnancy

What to do: seek a reproductive specialist’s opinion. Embryo transfer, advanced reproductive techniques or choosing not to breed may be more appropriate.

Do Not Breed Yet

Pause the breeding plan if:

  • Pregnancy status is uncertain

  • Active uterine infection is present

  • The mare is systemically ill

  • Pain is poorly controlled

  • Body condition is severely low or excessive

  • A relevant genetic mating risk has not been assessed

  • Two carriers of the same serious recessive disorder are being paired

  • The stallion’s semen or disease status is unknown

  • No emergency veterinary or transport plan exists

  • The foal has no realistic home or purpose

What to do: correct the problem first. The breeding season is less important than avoiding a preventable disaster.

When Does Breeding Become an Emergency?

During Pregnancy

Call your veterinarian urgently if the mare develops:

  • Vaginal discharge

  • Vaginal bleeding

  • Premature udder development

  • Milk dripping before term

  • Fever

  • Depression

  • Reduced appetite

  • Colic

  • Severe lameness

  • Signs of laminitis

  • Sudden abdominal enlargement or distress

  • Suspected abortion

  • A visible fetal membrane or tissue

During Foaling

Call immediately if:

  • A thick red membrane appears first

  • No foot or amnion appears within about ten minutes of the water breaking

  • Only one foot appears

  • The soles face upward

  • The nose appears without both forelimbs

  • The mare stops progressing

  • Active delivery exceeds approximately 20 to 30 minutes

  • The mare collapses

  • There is severe bleeding

  • The foal appears stuck

A red bag delivery means the placenta has separated prematurely and the foal may be losing oxygen. Open the membrane if the foal is visible and contact the veterinarian immediately. Do not stand and photograph it for the group chat.

Normal equine labour moves quickly, and delay substantially worsens the chance of a healthy outcome. (Merck Veterinary Manual)

After Foaling

Seek urgent care if:

  • The placenta is not passed within three hours

  • The mare has severe or persistent colic

  • There is heavy bleeding

  • The mare is weak, depressed or febrile

  • Discharge is foul-smelling

  • The mare will not allow nursing

  • The foal does not stand and nurse

  • The foal loses its suckle reflex

  • The foal becomes lethargic

  • Milk comes from the foal’s nostrils

  • The foal has diarrhoea, swollen joints or breathing difficulty

What Should You Do Before Breeding?

1. Define the Foal’s Purpose

Write down what the foal is intended to become.

Be specific. “A nice horse” is not a breeding objective.

2. Assess the Mare Honestly

List her strengths and weaknesses, including:

  • Temperament

  • Soundness

  • Conformation

  • Performance

  • Medical history

  • Reproductive history

  • Genetic results

3. Arrange the Veterinary Examination

Do this before paying non-refundable fees or ordering semen.

4. Complete Relevant Genetic Testing

Test both parents and interpret them as a mating pair.

5. Choose the Stallion for Compatibility

Look for complementary traits rather than trying to make the stallion “fix everything.”

6. Review the Breeding Contract

Understand:

  • Fees

  • Included doses

  • Collection charges

  • Shipping

  • Live-foal terms

  • Rebreeding rights

  • Substitution clauses

  • Registration eligibility

7. Decide on the Breeding Method

Choose live cover, cooled semen, frozen semen or an assisted reproductive method based on fertility, logistics and cost.

8. Build the Full Budget

Include routine care, repeat cycles, pregnancy monitoring, foaling and neonatal emergencies.

9. Create a Pregnancy Monitoring Plan

Book early scans, including the day 14 to 16 twin examination.

10. Prepare the Foaling Location

It should be safe, clean, observable and accessible to your veterinarian.

11. Identify the Referral Hospital

Know:

  • Where it is

  • How long transport takes

  • Whether it accepts emergency foaling cases

  • Who can drive

  • Whether the trailer is ready

12. Decide the Foal’s Long-Term Future

Plan for:

  • Registration

  • Handling

  • Weaning

  • Gelding if appropriate

  • Training

  • Insurance

  • Sale or permanent home

Breeding is a long-term project, not an eleven-month event.
