Breeding a performance mare is always a balancing act. You want the mare fit, sound, and mentally settled, but you also want the best chance of ovulation, fertilisation, embryo recovery, early pregnancy survival, and eventually a healthy foal.

The mistake is thinking this is a simple yes or no question. Exercise is not automatically bad for fertility. A fit mare is not automatically a poor breeding candidate. But intense work, heat stress, dehydration, travel stress, poor timing around ovulation, and a packed competition schedule can all work against reproduction.

The real question is not, “Can she exercise?” It is, “What type of exercise, in what weather, at what stage of the cycle or pregnancy, and what are we trying to achieve this season?”

Critical Risk: Sick, Overheated, Painful, or Pregnant With Warning Signs
