Can Horses Eat Corn Safely? Benefits, Risks and How Much to Feed

Corn is not poisonous to horses, and its presence in a properly formulated horse feed is not automatically a problem.

The concern is that corn is an extremely concentrated source of starch and energy. Feeding too much, feeding it in large meals, introducing it suddenly or giving it to a metabolically sensitive horse can increase the risk of digestive disturbance, obesity and laminitis.

Corn also carries a particularly important feed-safety risk: contamination with fumonisins, which can cause a usually fatal neurological disease in horses.

Quick Answer

Healthy horses can eat properly processed corn as part of a balanced ration when they genuinely require additional energy. Corn should usually be cracked, rolled, flaked, extruded or incorporated into a commercial feed rather than fed as whole kernels.

It is generally unsuitable for horses with insulin dysregulation, equine metabolic syndrome, obesity, previous laminitis or conditions requiring a low-starch diet. Sudden access to a large quantity of corn is an emergency, even if the horse initially appears normal.

Is Corn Safe for Horses?

Yes, corn can be fed safely to selected horses.

It is commonly used in commercial feeds because it provides concentrated calories and is palatable. It may be useful for hardworking horses, hard keepers and some pregnant or lactating mares whose energy requirements cannot be met through forage alone.

However, many horses do not need corn or any other cereal grain. Good-quality forage may provide all the calories required by an adult horse at maintenance or in light work. What Does Corn Provide?

Corn primarily provides energy.

Compared with other common cereal grains, corn is:

  • Higher in energy than oats and barley

  • High in starch

  • Low in fibre

  • Lower in crude protein than oats

  • Particularly low in lysine and other important amino acids

  • Low in calcium relative to phosphorus

The claim that corn provides twice as much energy as oats by weight is misleading. That comparison is sometimes made by volume because corn is much denser than oats. By weight, corn is more energy-dense, but it does not provide twice the energy. This distinction matters because horse feed should always be weighed rather than measured by scoop. A scoop of corn may weigh substantially more than the same scoop of oats.

A scoop is not a unit of nutrition. It is a bucket with confidence.

Corn Is Not a Complete Feed

Straight corn does not provide a balanced equine ration.

It is deficient or inadequate in several important areas, including:

  • Calcium

  • High-quality protein

  • Lysine

  • Several vitamins and trace minerals

  • Fibre

Corn may add calories, but it cannot independently meet the nutritional requirements of a growing horse, lactating mare or performance horse.

If corn is included in a commercial concentrate, those deficiencies can be corrected by other ingredients and added vitamins and minerals. If straight corn is added to the diet at home, the entire ration must be recalculated rather than simply placing extra calcium or alfalfa into the bucket and hoping the numbers become friendly.

Does Corn Have a Bad Calcium-to-Phosphorus Ratio?

Like other cereal grains, corn is low in calcium and contains more phosphorus than calcium.

The important issue is not the ratio within the corn alone. It is the calcium-to-phosphorus ratio of the entire daily ration.

For horses, total calcium intake should exceed phosphorus intake. A desirable overall calcium-to-phosphorus ratio is approximately 1.5:1, although requirements and acceptable ranges vary with age and physiological status. A chronically inverted total ratio can interfere with normal skeletal mineralisation. It is more accurate to describe this as a ration imbalance than to say corn simply “leaches calcium from the bones.”

Corn should therefore be balanced with an appropriate combination of:

  • Forage

  • A complete commercial concentrate

  • A ration balancer

  • A veterinarian or nutritionist-formulated mineral supplement

Alfalfa may contribute calcium, but adding it blindly does not guarantee that phosphorus, copper, zinc, protein and total energy are properly balanced.

Does Corn Need to Be Processed?

Corn grain should normally be processed before it is fed to horses.

Its kernel is harder and less readily accessed than an oat kernel. Common forms include:

  • Cracked corn

  • Rolled corn

  • Steam-flaked corn

  • Micronised corn

  • Extruded corn

  • Corn incorporated into pellets

Merck Veterinary Manual recommends cracking or rolling corn to maximise digestibility and states that whole corn is not adequately digested by horses. Processing breaks the kernel and makes its starch more accessible to digestive enzymes. (Merck Veterinary Manual)

Is More Processing Always Better?

Not necessarily.

Processing can improve the amount of starch digested in the small intestine, which may reduce the quantity reaching the hindgut. However, making starch more available can also produce a larger glucose and insulin response.

A controlled study comparing untreated, ground, steamed, micronised, steam-flaked and popped corn found that corn caused substantial increases in glucose and insulin, although the different processing methods did not produce clearly consistent differences in every glucose and insulin measurement. The practical conclusion is:

  • Processing does not turn corn into a low-starch feed.

  • The total quantity fed still matters.

  • The horse’s metabolic status still matters.

  • Meal size still matters.

  • A commercially formulated feed is generally safer than improvising with straight corn.

Corn Grain, Corn Oil and Corn Byproducts Are Not the Same

The word “corn” can appear on a feed label in several very different forms.

Corn Grain

This is the starchy seed and is used primarily as an energy source.

Corn Oil

Corn oil contains fat rather than starch. It can provide concentrated calories without the same post-meal starch load as corn grain.

It is still calorie-dense and can cause obesity if added unnecessarily, but nutritionally it is very different from feeding cracked corn.

Corn Bran

Corn bran consists mostly of fibrous outer material and contains much less starch than the intact grain.

Corn Gluten Feed

Corn gluten feed is a milling byproduct containing fibre, protein and variable amounts of residual starch. It is not nutritionally equivalent to corn grain.

Distillers’ Dried Grains

Distillers’ dried grains are produced after corn fermentation and usually contain more protein and less starch than raw corn. They may be incorporated into feeds in limited amounts but require careful quality control and ration balancing. (Merck Veterinary Manual)

This is why rejecting a commercial feed simply because “corn” appears somewhere on the ingredient list can be misleading.

The relevant questions are:

  • Which corn ingredient is present?

  • How much is present?

  • What is the total starch and sugar content?

  • How many calories does the feed provide?

  • Is the feed fortified and balanced?

  • How much is being fed per meal?

When Might Corn Be Useful?

Hardworking Horses

A horse performing genuinely hard work may require more energy than forage alone can provide.

Corn can increase the ration’s calorie density without requiring an enormous feed volume. It may be useful in selected racing, endurance, ranch or high-level performance rations when balanced with adequate forage, protein, fat, vitamins and minerals. (Merck Veterinary Manual)

That does not mean every competition horse needs corn. Many perform well on diets based on:

  • High-quality forage

  • Digestible fibre

  • Fat

  • Smaller quantities of appropriately formulated concentrate

Hard Keepers

Corn may help a healthy horse that struggles to maintain condition despite adequate forage.

Before increasing grain, investigate common causes of poor weight, including:

  • Dental disease

  • Insufficient forage

  • Poor forage quality

  • Parasites

  • Gastric disease

  • Chronic pain

  • Social competition

  • Heavy workload

  • PPID

  • Liver or kidney disease

  • Chronic intestinal disease

Thin is a finding, not a diagnosis.

A higher-fat, lower-starch commercial feed may be a better choice than simply adding straight corn.

Lactating Mares

Lactation substantially increases energy and protein requirements. A balanced broodmare concentrate may contain corn as part of its energy supply.

Straight corn alone is not appropriate because the mare also needs:

  • High-quality protein

  • Lysine

  • Calcium

  • Phosphorus

  • Copper

  • Zinc

  • Vitamins

Growing Horses

Corn can supply energy to growing horses, but excessive energy intake and poorly balanced minerals can contribute to developmental orthopaedic disease.

Senior Horses

A senior horse does not need corn simply because of age.

Older horses with poor dentition may benefit from a soft, complete senior feed that happens to contain processed corn. Whole or coarsely cracked corn is not an appropriate substitute for a properly formulated complete feed when chewing is impaired.

Which Horses Should Avoid Corn?

Horses With Equine Metabolic Syndrome

Horses with equine metabolic syndrome and insulin dysregulation should generally not receive corn or other cereal grains.

Current Merck guidance recommends eliminating grain in horses with EMS and feeding low-NSC forage with an appropriate low-sugar ration balancer. (Merck Veterinary Manual)

Horses With Previous Laminitis

Corn is a poor choice for a horse with a history of hyperinsulinaemic or grain-associated laminitis unless a specialist has specifically incorporated a very small amount into a calculated ration.

There are usually safer calorie sources available.

Overweight Horses and Easy Keepers

Corn is concentrated energy.

An overweight horse, pony, donkey or mule does not become healthier simply because the extra calories arrived in a traditional-looking grain.

Low volume does not mean low calorie.

Horses With PPID and Insulin Dysregulation

PPID alone does not automatically mean that every grain is prohibited. However, many horses with PPID also develop insulin dysregulation, which significantly increases laminitis risk.

These horses should be tested and managed according to their actual metabolic status.

Horses With PSSM or Recurrent Tying-Up

Horses with type 1 polysaccharide storage myopathy are generally managed with restricted starch, adequate forage, additional fat when calories are needed and consistent exercise.

Sedentary Horses

A horse doing little work usually does not require a highly concentrated cereal grain.

If a horse maintains healthy body condition on forage and a ration balancer, adding corn creates a calorie surplus rather than a performance advantage.

Why Can Too Much Corn Cause Colic or Laminitis?

The horse has a limited capacity to digest starch enzymatically in the small intestine.

When a large starch meal is fed, some starch may escape small-intestinal digestion and reach the caecum and colon. Hindgut bacteria then ferment it rapidly.

This can cause:

  1. Increased production of lactic acid

  2. A fall in hindgut pH

  3. Disruption of the normal microbial population

  4. Damage to the intestinal environment

  5. Release and absorption of inflammatory substances

  6. Colic, diarrhoea, systemic illness or laminitis

Grain-overload laminitis is associated with appreciable amounts of undigested starch reaching the hindgut and triggering acidosis and inflammatory injury. (Merck Veterinary Manual)

Corn is not the only grain capable of doing this. Barley, wheat, oats and high-starch commercial feeds can also cause grain overload.

Corn simply makes overfeeding easier because it contains so much energy and starch in a relatively small, dense meal.

How Much Corn Can a Horse Eat?

There is no safe universal “number of scoops.”

The correct quantity depends on:

  • Body weight

  • Workload

  • Body condition

  • Total daily forage

  • Total starch and sugar in the ration

  • Processing method

  • Metabolic status

  • Other concentrate ingredients

  • Number of daily meals

Merck advises that a horse should not receive more than 0.5% of body weight in any grain-based concentrate in a single feeding. For a 500-kilogram horse, that general upper boundary is 2.5 kilograms of grain-based concentrate per meal. Larger amounts should be divided into smaller meals at least four hours apart. That figure is an outer safety ceiling for total grain-based concentrate, not a recommendation to feed 2.5 kilograms of straight corn.

Because corn is particularly high in starch, a suitable straight-corn allowance could be far lower. Many horses should receive none.

A better approach is to calculate:

  • Grams of starch per meal

  • Total digestible energy

  • Total daily NSC

  • The horse’s energy requirement

  • The amount of forage being consumed

For metabolically abnormal horses, the allowable NSC intake is dramatically lower and corn is generally eliminated altogether. (Merck Veterinary Manual)

How Should Corn Be Introduced?

Any new grain or concentrate should be introduced gradually.

A sensible transition generally takes 10 to 14 days:

  1. Begin with a small amount of the new ration.

  2. Reduce the previous feed by a corresponding amount.

  3. Increase the new feed in small steps every few days.

  4. Monitor appetite, manure, behaviour and hoof comfort.

  5. Stop increasing if the horse develops loose manure, colic or feed refusal.

  6. Reassess weight and body condition after several weeks.

Do not add a large corn meal suddenly because the horse worked harder that day or looks slightly thin.

The hindgut microbial population adapts to the ration it receives regularly. It does not appreciate surprise menus.

Should Corn Be Fed Before Exercise?

Large grain-based meals should not be given shortly before strenuous exercise, transport or another major stressor.

Merck advises against feeding grain-based concentrate meals larger than 0.25% of body weight within one hour of hard work, transport or comparable stress. Exhausted horses with poor gut motility should not be given a large concentrate meal. (Merck Veterinary Manual)

Forage and water remain more important around most exercise.

Is Corn in Commercial Horse Feed Bad?

No.

Corn in a reputable, correctly formulated commercial feed is not automatically harmful.

A well-designed feed may:

  • Process the corn for appropriate digestibility

  • Control the amount of corn included

  • Combine it with digestible fibre and fat

  • Add high-quality protein

  • Correct calcium and phosphorus

  • Add vitamins and trace minerals

  • Specify a safe feeding rate

Problems arise when owners:

  • Feed far more than the label recommends

  • Feed the product in one enormous meal

  • Combine it with additional straight grain

  • Use it for an insulin-dysregulated horse

  • Feed too little to deliver the intended fortification

  • Choose a feed intended for a different class of animal

Commercial horse feeds are not interchangeable. Read the label and ask the manufacturer for starch, sugar and digestible-energy information when it is not printed on the bag. (Merck Veterinary Manual)

The Major Corn-Specific Risk: Fumonisin

The most serious corn-specific concern is not simply starch.

It is fumonisin contamination.

Fumonisins are toxins produced mainly by certain Fusarium moulds growing on corn. Horses, mules and donkeys are extremely sensitive.

Exposure can cause equine leukoencephalomalacia, sometimes called mouldy corn poisoning. This disease causes destructive damage to the brain’s white matter and is usually fatal once neurological signs develop. (Merck Veterinary Manual)

Signs of Fumonisin Poisoning

Warning signs may include:

  • Sudden depression

  • Drowsiness

  • Reduced appetite

  • Difficulty swallowing

  • Blindness

  • Aimless wandering

  • Circling

  • Staggering

  • Head pressing

  • Incoordination

  • Recumbency

  • Jaundice when the liver is affected

The clinical course may progress over hours or days.

Corn Does Not Need to Look Mouldy

Fumonisin may be present even when the grain does not appear dramatically mouldy.

Damaged, lightweight, broken or poorly formed kernels are more likely to contain high toxin concentrations. The toxin may also be present inside a mixed feed where owners cannot see the original corn. (Merck Veterinary Manual)

FDA guidance recommends no more than 5 ppm total fumonisins in corn and corn byproducts intended for equids, with those ingredients making up no more than 20% of the total diet on a dry-matter basis. This corresponds to approximately 1 ppm in the complete equine ration. (U.S. Food and Drug Administration)

How to Reduce the Risk

  • Buy horse feed from reputable manufacturers.

  • Do not feed visibly mouldy or musty corn.

  • Do not feed damaged home-grown corn without appropriate testing.

  • Avoid unlabeled livestock or “all-stock” feeds.

  • Keep corn dry and protected from humidity.

  • Do not use feed from a wet or flooded storage area.

  • Discard feed that smells stale, fermented or unusual.

  • Report neurological signs immediately.

  • Save a feed sample and the bag or batch label if illness is suspected.

Are Beet Pulp, Rice Bran and Alfalfa Always Safer?

Not automatically.

Beet Pulp

Beet pulp is high in digestible fibre and generally low in starch and sugar when unmolassed. It can provide calories without the same starch load as corn.

The actual product should still be checked because added molasses and other ingredients can change the final NSC level. Beet pulp should be prepared according to the manufacturer’s instructions. (Merck Veterinary Manual)

Stabilised Rice Bran

Rice bran provides concentrated calories from fat and may allow part of a grain ration to be replaced.

However, it is naturally high in phosphorus and low in calcium. Choose a calcium-fortified equine product or balance the total ration appropriately. It is also not automatically low in starch. (Merck Veterinary Manual)

Alfalfa Pellets

Alfalfa pellets provide protein, calcium and digestible fibre.

They are not a direct low-calorie replacement for corn and may be unnecessarily rich for overweight horses. They can be useful when the protein and calcium fit the complete ration.

Oil or High-Fat Feed

Fat supplies calories without starch and can be useful for hard keepers or selected performance horses.

It must be introduced gradually, balanced with adequate vitamin E and stopped before it creates obesity or displaces essential nutrients.

The safest substitute depends on what problem you are solving.

A horse needing weight gain, a lactating mare, an insulin-dysregulated pony and an endurance horse should not receive the same answer simply because they all own digestive tracts.

How Worried Should You Be?

Lower Risk

The horse:

  • Is healthy

  • Has no history of laminitis

  • Maintains appropriate body condition

  • Is doing substantial work

  • Receives corn within a balanced commercial feed

  • Receives small, weighed meals

  • Has continuous access to forage and water

  • Has been transitioned gradually

What to do: continue monitoring body condition, manure and hoof comfort. Review the ration periodically.

Moderate Risk

The horse:

  • Is receiving straight cracked corn

  • Eats large concentrate meals

  • Has not had the ration calculated

  • Is gaining weight

  • Has no forage analysis

  • Is being fed by scoop

  • Has recently changed feeds

What to do: stop increasing the ration and arrange a full nutritional review. Weigh the feed and divide it into smaller meals.

High Risk

The horse:

  • Is obese

  • Has insulin dysregulation

  • Has previous laminitis

  • Has PSSM

  • Receives corn despite minimal work

  • Has access to damaged or questionable grain

  • Has had a sudden substantial ration increase
