A rabbit that stops eating or produces fewer droppings should never be dismissed as merely having an upset stomach.

Rabbits are designed to eat fibre throughout the day. When pain, illness, stress or obstruction reduces food intake, gastrointestinal movement slows. The gut contents become drier, gas accumulates, appetite falls further and the rabbit can enter a rapidly worsening cycle of pain, dehydration and malnutrition.

The first question is not simply, “Does my rabbit have stasis?” It is whether the rabbit has non-obstructive gastrointestinal hypomotility, a mechanical obstruction, severe gastric dilation or another painful disease presenting through reduced appetite.

Rabbit GI stasis is a syndrome in which movement through part or all of the gastrointestinal tract becomes abnormally slow. Common signs include reduced appetite, refusal of favourite foods, smaller or fewer droppings, lethargy, abdominal pain and bloating.

What Is Rabbit GI Stasis?

GI stasis describes reduced movement through the stomach, small intestine, caecum or colon. The slowdown may range from mild hypomotility to near-complete functional ileus.

It is almost always secondary to another problem, such as:

  • Pain

  • Dental disease

  • Dehydration

  • Stress

  • Inappropriate diet

  • Urinary disease

  • Reproductive disease

  • Liver or kidney disease

  • Gastrointestinal obstruction

  • Another systemic illness

Calling the problem “stasis” is therefore only the beginning of the diagnosis. (Veterinary Medicine at Illinois)

What Happens Inside the Gut?

A common sequence is:

  1. Pain, illness or stress reduces food intake.

  2. Water intake often falls at the same time.

  3. Gastrointestinal contents become progressively drier.

  4. Normal motility slows.

  5. Gas and fluid begin accumulating.

  6. Abdominal discomfort worsens.

  7. The rabbit eats even less.

  8. Metabolic disturbances, hepatic lipidosis and further dehydration may develop.

The rabbit becomes trapped in a self-reinforcing cycle. Treating only the slow gut without addressing the original pain or illness leaves the reason for the stasis untouched. (Merck Veterinary Manual)

A 2025 study found measurable differences in the faecal microbial communities of rabbits with GI stasis compared with healthy rabbits. This supports an association between stasis and dysbiosis, but it does not prove that one bacterial change causes the syndrome or that an arbitrary probiotic will reverse it. (PubMed)

GI Stasis Versus Intestinal Obstruction

This distinction is critical.

Non-obstructive GI stasis means the bowel is physically open but moving poorly.

Mechanical obstruction means something is physically preventing normal passage through the stomach or intestine.

Both can cause appetite loss, reduced droppings, gas and pain. Owners cannot reliably distinguish them from symptoms alone.

Blood glucose can help support the distinction but is not diagnostic on its own. In one clinical study, rabbits with confirmed obstruction had a much higher average glucose concentration than rabbits with non-obstructive stasis. Severe hyperglycaemia, hyponatraemia, azotaemia and marked gastric dilation are also associated with more serious disease and poorer outcomes. (BVA Journals)

What Causes Rabbit Intestinal Obstruction?

Reported causes include:

  • Compressed mats of hair

  • Dried food material

  • Seeds or other unsuitable food

  • Synthetic material

  • Adhesions

  • Hernias

  • Tumours

  • Intestinal entrapment

  • Other foreign material

The small intestine is the most common site. Gastric dilation may develop behind the obstruction as food, fluid and gas accumulate. (BVA Journals)

Are Hairballs the Main Cause of GI Stasis?

Usually not.

Healthy rabbits swallow hair during normal grooming. When the gastrointestinal contents remain hydrated and fibre-rich, that hair generally passes with the rest of the ingesta.

Hair becomes more likely to accumulate when:

  • Food intake has already fallen

  • The diet is low in long fibre

  • The rabbit is dehydrated

  • Gut motility is reduced

  • Excessive grooming occurs during moulting or skin disease

A stomach containing hair does not automatically mean the hair caused the illness. In many rabbits, the hair is a consequence of poor motility rather than the original problem. What Are the Signs of Rabbit GI Stasis?

Early Signs

Early changes may include:

  • Eating less hay

  • Refusing pellets or vegetables

  • Refusing a favourite treat

  • Taking food into the mouth but dropping it

  • Smaller faecal pellets

  • Fewer pellets

  • Dry or irregularly shaped pellets

  • Spending longer periods hidden

  • Reduced activity

  • Sitting in a hunched position

  • Mild tooth grinding

  • Repeatedly changing position

  • Reduced grooming

A rabbit does not need to have stopped eating completely before the situation matters. The University of Illinois advises concern when appetite has been reduced for more than four hours, favourite foods are refused or faecal output has become abnormal. (Veterinary Medicine at Illinois)

More Concerning Signs

As the condition progresses, you may notice:

  • Complete food refusal

  • Very few or no droppings

  • Loud tooth grinding

  • Pressing the abdomen against the floor

  • Stretching out repeatedly

  • A swollen or tense abdomen

  • Marked lethargy

  • Weakness

  • Cold body temperature

  • Reduced responsiveness

  • Very quiet or absent gut sounds

  • Rapid or difficult breathing

  • Dehydration

  • Sudden deterioration

Hypothermia, bradycardia, a markedly distended abdomen and signs of poor circulation are particularly concerning for complicated disease or shock. (Veterinary Medicine at Illinois)

Can Rabbits Vomit?

No. Rabbits cannot normally vomit because of the anatomy and muscular function of the gastro-oesophageal junction. (Merck Veterinary Manual)

Fluid, foam or food appearing from a rabbit’s mouth or nostrils may indicate:

  • Severe gastric overfilling

  • Regurgitation from the oesophagus

  • Choking

  • Aspiration

  • Oral disease

  • Respiratory secretions

  • A critical gastrointestinal emergency

This should be treated as urgent.

What Causes GI Stasis in Rabbits?

Dental Disease

Dental pain is one of the most important underlying causes.

All rabbit teeth grow continuously. Problems affecting the cheek teeth are often hidden at the back of the mouth and may not be visible during a brief awake examination.

Possible warning signs include:

  • Drooling

  • Wet fur beneath the chin

  • Food being dropped

  • Preference for softer food

  • Reduced hay intake

  • Uneven chewing

  • Eye discharge

  • Facial swelling

  • Weight loss

  • Recurrent stasis

A complete oral examination may require sedation or anaesthesia. Skull radiographs or CT may be needed when tooth-root disease, abscesses or deeper jaw abnormalities are suspected. (Merck Veterinary Manual)

Low-Fibre or Inappropriate Diet

Long-strand fibre supports normal gastrointestinal movement and healthy dental wear.

Dietary risk factors include:

  • Pellet-only diets

  • Muesli or cereal mixes

  • Large amounts of grain

  • Excessive fruit

  • High-starch treats

  • Inadequate hay

  • Abrupt dietary change

  • Selective feeding

  • Spoiled food

Controlled feeding studies found that rabbits offered muesli selectively ate the more palatable components, consumed less hay and water and developed less favourable faecal and dental changes. Higher hay intake was associated with greater faecal output and fewer uneaten caecotrophs. (PubMed)

A low-fibre diet may contribute to stasis, but a rabbit already refusing food should not simply be sent home with instructions to eat more hay. The underlying reason for the anorexia still needs to be found.

Pain Elsewhere in the Body

Almost any painful condition can reduce appetite enough to trigger secondary stasis.

Examples include:

  • Arthritis

  • Spinal pain

  • Sore hocks

  • Wounds

  • Bite injuries

  • Ear disease

  • Eye pain

  • Recent surgery

  • Fractures

  • Bladder inflammation

  • Urinary stones

  • Abdominal masses

  • Reproductive disease

The gut may be where the consequences appear, while the original problem lies somewhere else entirely.

Urinary and Kidney Disease

Bladder sludge, urinary stones, cystitis and kidney disease may cause:

  • Straining

  • Repeated litter-tray visits

  • Urine scald

  • Blood in the urine

  • Abdominal discomfort

  • Appetite loss

  • Secondary GI stasis

Radiographs, urinalysis, bloodwork and ultrasound may be required to distinguish urinary pain from gastrointestinal disease.

Reproductive Disease

Uterine disorders are common in older intact female rabbits and can cause pain, reduced appetite, anaemia, abdominal enlargement or secondary stasis.

Published prevalence varies considerably depending on the population studied. A large retrospective analysis found uterine disorders in 26.8% of female rabbit necropsies, while another study found uterine adenocarcinoma in 13.1% of intact females overall, with prevalence increasing markedly with age. The frequently repeated claim that 80% of all unspayed females develop uterine cancer is not a universal population statistic. (PubMed)

Spaying a healthy non-breeding female reduces the future risk of uterine disease. Surgery may also treat localised uterine disease when it is already present, but it is not automatically curative once a tumour has spread.

Liver Lobe Torsion

Liver lobe torsion causes sudden, severe abdominal pain and appetite loss and can easily be mistaken for ordinary GI stasis.

Ultrasound may show an enlarged affected lobe with absent blood flow. This is a surgical emergency because the twisted tissue loses its circulation and may bleed or release inflammatory material. (Merck Veterinary Manual)

Stress

Stress can reduce food intake and motility, particularly after:

  • Moving home

  • Boarding

  • Travel

  • Hospitalisation

  • Loss of a companion

  • Bonding conflict

  • Predator exposure

  • Major changes in routine

  • Excessive handling

Stress-related stasis should still be treated seriously. “It is only stress” does not make the resulting pain, dehydration or anorexia harmless. (Veterinary Medicine at Illinois)

Systemic Illness

GI stasis may accompany:

  • Liver disease

  • Kidney disease

  • Respiratory infection

  • Heart disease

  • Cancer

  • Sepsis

  • Heatstroke

  • Neurological disease

  • Toxin exposure

  • Severe parasitic or infectious disease

The mistake I would avoid is prescribing motility medication without asking why the rabbit stopped eating in the first place.

How Worried Should You Be?

Lower Immediate Risk

The rabbit:

  • Ate normally earlier in the day

  • Has only briefly reduced interest in one food

  • Still eats hay and greens

  • Produces normal-sized droppings

  • Remains bright and active

  • Has no abdominal swelling or pain

Action: Offer fresh hay, leafy greens and water. Observe closely over the next one to two hours. If appetite or faecal output does not return fully, contact a rabbit-experienced veterinarian.

Moderate Concern

The rabbit:

  • Has eaten less for more than four hours

  • Refuses favourite foods

  • Produces smaller or fewer droppings

  • Is quieter than usual

  • Sits hunched

  • Shows mild tooth grinding

  • Has a history of dental or urinary disease

Action: Arrange same-day veterinary assessment. Do not wait until the rabbit has produced no faeces at all. (Veterinary Medicine at Illinois)

High Concern

The rabbit:

  • Has stopped eating

  • Produces almost no faeces

  • Has obvious abdominal pain

  • Has a distended abdomen

  • Is markedly lethargic

  • Appears dehydrated

  • Has become cold

  • Is repeatedly stretching or pressing the abdomen down

Action: Seek urgent veterinary care. Obstruction, severe stasis, gastric dilation, liver torsion and other serious disease must be ruled out.

Critical

The rabbit has:

  • A very swollen or tense abdomen

  • Collapse or minimal responsiveness

  • Open-mouth or markedly laboured breathing

  • Pale, grey or blue gums

  • Severe continuous pain

  • Food or fluid coming from the mouth or nose

  • No ability to stand

  • Rapid deterioration

  • Signs of shock

  • Recent trauma

  • Black or bloody faeces

Action: Attend an emergency veterinary hospital immediately.

Reduced appetite and faecal output are not specific.

A rabbit may have GI stasis and one of these conditions simultaneously. Stasis often describes the consequence, not the primary diagnosis.

When Is Rabbit GI Stasis an Emergency?

Seek immediate veterinary care when your rabbit has:

  • Complete food refusal

  • No faecal production

  • Marked abdominal distension

  • A hard or tense abdomen

  • Severe or persistent tooth grinding

  • Collapse

  • Hypothermia

  • Weakness or inability to stand

  • Rapid or difficult breathing

  • Food or fluid at the mouth or nostrils

  • Pale or blue tissues

  • Black or bloody faeces

  • Rapid deterioration over a few hours

A rabbit that is bloated, hypothermic, severely dehydrated or suspected of having an obstruction should be stabilised before routine syringe feeding. (Veterinary Medicine at Illinois)

What To Do Right Now

1. Contact a Rabbit-Experienced Veterinarian

Tell the clinic:

  • When the rabbit last ate normally

  • What foods are being refused

  • When normal droppings were last produced

  • Whether any faeces are still passing

  • Whether the abdomen looks enlarged

  • Whether the rabbit is grinding their teeth

  • Current medications

  • Previous dental or urinary problems

  • Recent stress, surgery or diet changes

Call ahead if the rabbit is unstable so the team can prepare warming, oxygen, analgesia and imaging.

2. Record Appetite and Droppings

Bring photographs of:

  • Recent faecal pellets

  • The rabbit’s posture

  • The abdomen if visibly enlarged

  • Any urine abnormalities

  • Food that has or has not been eaten

A short video of behaviour or tooth grinding can also help.

3. Offer Food Only When It Is Safe

An alert rabbit without marked abdominal swelling may be offered:

  • Fresh grass hay

  • Familiar leafy greens

  • Normal pellets

  • Fresh water

Do not introduce unusual treats or a major new diet during the episode.

4. Do Not Force-Feed a Bloated or Unstable Rabbit

Do not syringe-feed before veterinary assessment when the rabbit has:

  • A swollen or tense abdomen

  • Severe pain

  • Marked weakness

  • Hypothermia

  • Repeated gagging

  • Fluid at the mouth or nose

  • Suspected partial or complete obstruction

5. Do Not Give Motility Drugs Without Advice

Metoclopramide, cisapride and other prokinetics may be used in selected non-obstructive cases.

They should not be given blindly when:

  • Obstruction is possible

  • The stomach is severely distended

  • The diagnosis is unclear

  • The rabbit is dehydrated or unstable

6. Avoid Aggressive Abdominal Massage

Gentle touch may comfort some stable rabbits, but vigorous massage can:

  • Increase pain

  • Stress the rabbit

  • Damage a severely distended stomach or intestine

  • Worsen an obstruction

  • Aggravate an internal mass or torsion

Do not repeatedly press the abdomen to decide whether it feels hard.

7. Do Not Give Home “Hairball Remedies”

Avoid:

  • Mineral oil

  • Hairball paste

  • Pineapple juice

  • Papaya enzymes

  • Cooking oil

  • Human laxatives

  • Epsom salts

8. Maintain a Comfortable Temperature

Keep the rabbit indoors in a quiet, well-ventilated carrier or recovery area.

Use familiar bedding and avoid:

  • Direct heating pads without temperature control

  • Hot-water bottles touching the body

  • Heavy wrapping that traps excessive heat

  • Forceful handling

A cold rabbit needs controlled veterinary warming because hypothermia may indicate shock or severe disease.

9. Do Not Give Human Medication

Do not administer:

  • Ibuprofen

  • Paracetamol or acetaminophen

  • Aspirin

  • Human antacids

  • Leftover antibiotics

  • Dog or cat medication

  • Another rabbit’s prokinetics

Some medications that are routinely used in other species can cause severe intestinal disruption or toxicity in rabbits.

How Do Vets Diagnose Rabbit GI Stasis?

Initial Triage

The veterinarian first assesses:

  • Body temperature

  • Heart rate

  • Respiratory rate

  • Mucous membrane colour

  • Capillary refill time

  • Hydration

  • Blood pressure where available

  • Mentation

  • Abdominal size and pain

Abdominal Examination

The veterinarian evaluates:

  • Stomach size and consistency

  • Gas accumulation

  • Intestinal distension

  • Faecal material in the colon

  • Abdominal masses

  • Bladder size

  • Pain

  • Organ enlargement

Palpation is helpful but cannot reliably rule obstruction in or out.

Oral and Dental Examination

Assessment should include:

  • Facial symmetry

  • Jaw palpation

  • Incisor alignment

  • Tongue and cheek surfaces

  • Cheek teeth

  • Saliva and oral injury

Whole-body or abdominal radiographs help evaluate:

  • Gastric size

  • Gas and fluid distribution

  • Small intestinal dilation

  • Faecal volume

  • Urinary stones

  • Masses

Blood Glucose

Blood glucose is a useful part of the assessment.

Severe hyperglycaemia is more common in intestinal obstruction and severe illness than in uncomplicated stasis. It should be interpreted with the examination, radiographs, sodium and other blood results rather than used as a standalone obstruction test. (BVA Journals)

Bloodwork and Urinalysis

Testing may help identify:

  • Dehydration

  • Kidney dysfunction

  • Liver disease

  • Anaemia

  • Infection or inflammation

  • Electrolyte abnormalities

  • Glucose changes

  • Urinary disease

  • Evidence of systemic illness

A normal blood panel does not exclude dental disease or early obstruction.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound may help assess:

  • Gastrointestinal movement

  • Liver lobe torsion

  • Reproductive disease

  • Bladder abnormalities

  • Kidney disease

  • Abdominal masses

  • Free abdominal fluid

  • Selected foreign material or obstruction

It is particularly valuable when radiographs show an abnormality but do not reveal its exact origin.

CT

CT may be recommended when the veterinarian suspects:

  • Hidden cheek-tooth disease

  • Tooth-root elongation

  • Dental abscess

  • Skull disease

  • A complex abdominal mass

  • A condition not adequately defined by radiographs and ultrasound

How Is Rabbit GI Stasis Treated?

Pain Relief

Pain control is essential.

A painful rabbit is unlikely to begin eating normally, and continued anorexia perpetuates the stasis cycle. Veterinary treatment may use opioids, anti-inflammatory medication or multimodal analgesia according to hydration, kidney function and disease severity. (Veterinary Medicine at Illinois)

The concern that every opioid will worsen the gut should not lead to undertreating severe pain. Current rabbit guidance emphasises that controlling pain is a central treatment priority while hydration and nutritional support are also provided. (Veterinary Medicine at Illinois)

Fluid Therapy

Fluid treatment helps:

  • Restore circulation

  • Correct dehydration

  • Rehydrate gastrointestinal contents

  • Support kidney function

  • Correct electrolyte disturbances

  • Improve overall stability

The route may be oral, subcutaneous, intravenous or intraosseous depending on severity.

Fluid volume must be tailored to the individual. A rabbit with shock, heart disease, severe gastric dilation or altered urine production requires monitored treatment rather than an automatic home fluid volume.

Controlled Warming

Hypothermic rabbits may require controlled external warming while circulation and pain are addressed.

Warming must be monitored because:

  • Peripheral vasodilation can alter blood pressure

  • An unstable rabbit may overheat

  • Heat alone does not treat shock or obstruction

Nutritional Support

Once obstruction has been excluded and the rabbit is adequately stabilised, high-fibre nutritional support helps:

  • Provide calories

  • Reduce hepatic lipidosis risk

  • Support gastrointestinal movement

  • Supply oral fluid

  • Encourage normal caecal function

Motility Medication

Metoclopramide, cisapride or other motility drugs may be considered after:

  • Mechanical obstruction has been assessed

  • Hydration is being corrected

  • Pain is controlled

  • The veterinarian has identified an appropriate indication

Gastric Decompression

A rabbit with severe gastric dilation may require passage of a nasogastric or orogastric tube to remove gas and fluid.

  • Improve venous return

  • Increase space for breathing

  • Support stabilisation before surgery or continued medical management

Exploratory surgery may be required when:

  • Imaging supports a mechanical obstruction

  • The rabbit continues deteriorating

  • Pain remains severe despite treatment

Treating the Underlying Cause

Long-term success may require:

  • Dental correction or extraction

  • Treatment of a dental abscess

  • Urinary stone treatment

  • Spaying or removal of diseased reproductive tissue

  • Surgery for liver lobe torsion

  • Arthritis management

  • Removal of a foreign body

  • Diet correction

  • Stress reduction

  • Treatment of another systemic disease

If the underlying cause is missed, the rabbit may improve briefly and then relapse.

Are Antibiotics Routinely Needed?

No.

Routine non-obstructive stasis is not automatically a bacterial infection. Antibiotics are reserved for cases in which bacterial infection, sepsis, enteritis or another specific indication is suspected or confirmed.

Inappropriate oral antibiotics can disrupt the normal caecal microbiome and cause severe disease in rabbits. Medication should be selected by a rabbit-experienced veterinarian.

Are Probiotics Useful?

GI stasis is associated with changes in the rabbit faecal microbiome, but the ideal method of restoring that microbiome has not been established. The 2025 microbiome study specifically noted that further research is needed before targeted microbial treatments can be developed. (PubMed)

A probiotic should not replace fluid therapy, analgesia, feeding when safe or treatment of the primary disease.

How Long Does Recovery Take?

Many uncomplicated cases begin:

  • Showing more interest in food

  • Passing small droppings

  • Becoming more active

  • Showing less abdominal pain

within 24 to 48 hours of appropriate treatment.

What Is the Prognosis?

Uncomplicated Non-Obstructive Stasis

The prognosis is often good when:

  • Treatment begins early

  • The rabbit remains responsive

  • Body temperature is stable

  • Pain is controlled

  • Obstruction is excluded

  • The rabbit begins eating

  • The underlying cause can be corrected

Complicated Stasis

The prognosis becomes more guarded with:

  • Hypothermia

  • Shock

  • Severe dehydration

  • Complete anorexia

  • Advanced hepatic lipidosis

  • Significant kidney or liver abnormalities

  • Recurrent disease

  • A serious underlying condition

Obstruction and Gastric Dilation

Mechanical obstruction and severe gastric dilation carry a more guarded prognosis.

Common Rabbit GI Stasis Mistakes

Waiting for 12 Hours

A rabbit does not need to have gone half a day without food before veterinary advice is justified.

Reduced appetite or faecal output lasting more than four hours is already concerning, particularly when pain or lethargy is present. (Veterinary Medicine at Illinois)

Force-Feeding Every Rabbit Immediately

Syringe feeding is valuable in the right patient. It may be dangerous when obstruction, marked gastric dilation, severe dehydration or swallowing dysfunction is present.

Assuming It Is Just a Hairball

Hair is normally found in rabbit stomach contents. The original cause may be dental pain, dehydration, poor diet or another illness.

Giving a Prokinetic Before Imaging

Motility drugs should not be used blindly when a mechanical blockage is possible.

Using Pineapple, Papaya or Hairball Paste

These remedies do not correct dehydration, pain, obstruction or systemic disease.

Treating the Gut but Missing the Cause

A rabbit may improve after fluids and analgesia while the underlying dental abscess, urinary stone or uterine disease continues progressing.

Stopping Care as Soon as a Few Droppings Appear

The first pellets may be small or misshapen. Continue the prescribed plan and monitor appetite, hydration, comfort and faecal output until recovery is sustained.

How Can Rabbit GI Stasis Be Prevented?

Feed Unlimited Grass Hay

Grass hay should make up the majority of an adult rabbit’s diet, commonly more than 75%.

Suitable options include:

  • Timothy hay

  • Orchard grass

  • Meadow hay

  • Other species-appropriate grass hays

Avoid Muesli and Cereal Mixes

Muesli encourages selective eating. Rabbits tend to choose the high-starch components and leave the more balanced pellets.

Controlled studies found reduced hay and water intake, smaller faecal pellets and early dental abnormalities in muesli-fed rabbits. (PubMed)

Use a measured amount of a uniform, high-fibre rabbit pellet where pellets are appropriate.

Offer Fresh Water Reliably

Provide clean water at all times.

Movement, foraging and exploration support normal behaviour and help reduce obesity and stress.

  • Hiding areas

  • Appropriate social companionship

Monitor Appetite and Faeces Every Day

Know what is normal for your individual rabbit.

Check:

  • Hay consumption

  • Pellet and vegetable intake

  • Number of droppings

  • Dropping size

  • Caecotroph production

  • Water intake

  • Body weight

  • Activity

A weekly weight record can identify declining food intake before body condition changes become obvious.

Arrange Routine Dental and Health Examinations

Regular rabbit-experienced examinations help identify:

  • Cheek-tooth disease

  • Weight loss

  • Arthritis

  • Urinary disease

  • Reproductive disease

  • Abdominal masses

  • Chronic pain

A normal appearance of the incisors does not prove that the cheek teeth are healthy.

Groom During Moulting

Regular grooming reduces the amount of loose hair swallowed.

Spay Non-Breeding Females

Spaying prevents uterine disease when performed before it develops and removes one important future source of pain and secondary GI stasis.

Manage Chronic Pain

Rabbits with arthritis, spinal disease, sore hocks or dental problems may repeatedly develop stasis unless pain is recognised and managed.

A rabbit that becomes “fussy with food” or “slows down with age” may actually be eating less because movement or chewing hurts.

Can mild rabbit GI stasis resolve on its own?

A brief reduction in appetite may occasionally resolve after a minor stressor, but owners cannot reliably tell early stasis from obstruction or serious pain. If appetite or droppings remain reduced for more than four hours, seek veterinary advice.

Should I syringe-feed a rabbit with GI stasis?

Only when the rabbit is stable and obstruction has been reasonably excluded. Do not syringe-feed a rabbit with severe bloating, marked pain, hypothermia, fluid at the mouth or suspected obstruction.

Can I give simethicone for gas?

Simethicone is sometimes used as an adjunct, but evidence of meaningful benefit in rabbits is limited. It does not treat obstruction, dehydration or the underlying cause and should never delay veterinary assessment.

How quickly should my rabbit start eating after treatment?

Many uncomplicated cases show some appetite or faecal improvement within 24 to 48 hours. Lack of improvement, continuing pain or any clinical decline requires reassessment.

Is rabbit GI stasis contagious?
