A parrot does not stay healthy simply because the cage is clean and the food bowl is full.

Parrots are intelligent, social and physically active animals. Their long-term health depends on whether each day allows them to eat a balanced diet, work for food, move, fly or climb, sleep properly, bathe, chew, learn and form safe social relationships.

When those needs are not met, the first signs may look behavioural: screaming, biting, repetitive movements, feather damage, excessive nesting or an intense attachment to one person. However, the same changes can also be caused by pain or disease, so the answer is not always another toy or a stricter routine.

Quick Answer

A healthy parrot needs a species-appropriate diet, clean water, daily movement, regular foraging and enrichment, predictable social contact, a dark and quiet sleeping period, safe housing and routine care from an avian veterinarian.

There is no single diet percentage, cage setup or daily schedule that suits every parrot. Budgerigars, cockatiels, African greys, Amazons, macaws, Eclectus parrots and lorikeets have different nutritional, behavioural and environmental requirements.

If your parrot is losing weight, repeatedly regurgitating, damaging feathers, laying excessive eggs, developing foot sores, breathing harder or becoming suddenly aggressive, treat it as a possible medical problem rather than assuming the lifestyle is merely “out of balance.”

What Does a Balanced Parrot Lifestyle Really Mean?

“Balance” does not mean dividing the bird’s day into three perfectly equal sections.

It means giving the parrot enough opportunity to perform the behaviours that matter to that individual and species while keeping food intake, reproductive stimulation, physical safety and medical health under control.

A balanced parrot should generally be able to:

  • Eat without becoming overweight or deficient

  • Work for some of their food

  • Move throughout the day

  • Rest without continuous disturbance

  • Interact without becoming dependent on one person

  • Chew and destroy appropriate materials

  • Bathe and preen

  • Retreat from unwanted contact

  • Learn how to participate in routine care

  • Maintain a stable body weight and normal droppings

A bird can have a large cage and still have poor welfare if they spend the day alone with one bowl and no opportunity to fly or forage. Another bird can have many toys but remain chronically sleep-deprived, overweight or intensely pair-bonded to one person.

The complete pattern matters.

What Should a Healthy Parrot Eat?

Nutrition is one of the most important and most misunderstood parts of parrot care.

Seed-heavy diets are frequently high in energy and fat while being deficient in calcium, several vitamins, amino acids and trace minerals. Parrots also select preferred items from mixed diets, which can make an apparently varied bowl nutritionally unbalanced. Studies of captive Amazon parrots found that diets based predominantly on formulated food with fresh produce were more nutritionally balanced than diets containing larger amounts of seed. Is 70 to 80% Pellets Right for Every Parrot?

No.

For many medium and large, non-nectar-feeding parrots, a complete formulated diet can provide the nutritional foundation. A study in Amazon parrots found that a diet containing approximately 75% formulated food and 25% produce met nearly all measured nutrient recommendations. That does not make 75% the universal prescription for every species. (PubMed)

The Association of Avian Veterinarians specifically cautions that smaller parrots, including budgerigars, parrotlets, lovebirds and cockatiels, may not be suitable for a pellet-only diet. These birds may require an individually planned combination of pellets, measured seed and fresh foods. Lories and lorikeets require an appropriate nectar-based diet that must be prepared hygienically and replaced frequently.

A diet should be designed for the bird’s species, body condition, activity, reproductive status and medical history. The percentage printed in a general article is not more important than the bird sitting in front of you.

Which Fresh Foods Should Be Offered?

Fresh foods can add nutrients, texture, colour and foraging opportunities.

For many parrots, appropriate choices include:

  • Dark leafy vegetables

  • Capsicum or bell pepper

  • Pumpkin and squash

  • Broccoli

  • Carrot

  • Green beans

  • Peas

  • Cooked legumes

  • Small amounts of suitable whole grains

  • Species-appropriate fruit

Vegetables should generally make up more of the fresh-food portion than sweet fruit. Seeds and nuts can be extremely useful for training and foraging, but they should usually be measured rather than continually available to species prone to obesity.

Fresh food should be washed before feeding. Moist or cooked food should not be left in the enclosure for prolonged periods because bacterial and fungal growth can occur quickly. The AAV recommends removing uneaten cooked food within approximately one hour.

Which Foods Should Parrots Never Eat?

Core foods to avoid include:

  • Avocado

  • Chocolate or cocoa

  • Caffeine

  • Alcohol

  • Heavily salted foods

  • Mouldy or spoiled food

Birds should not be allowed to sample food simply because a person is eating it. The quantity that appears trivial to a human can be substantial for a bird weighing 80 or 400 grams.

Should Vitamins Be Added to the Water?

Usually not.

Vitamins, supplements and juice can make water unpalatable and encourage bacterial growth. A bird eating a complete formulated diet may also receive excessive amounts of certain nutrients when multiple supplements are added.

Use supplements only for a defined nutritional or medical reason under veterinary guidance. Water bowls should be washed thoroughly every day, rather than merely rinsed and refilled.

How Should You Convert a Seed-Eating Parrot to a Better Diet?

Do not abruptly remove the only food the bird recognises and assume hunger will force them to eat pellets.

Parrots may examine, crush or throw pellets without swallowing them. A full bowl of powdered pellets does not prove that the bird has eaten.

During conversion:

  1. Obtain a baseline weight using an accurate gram scale.

  2. Introduce the new food alongside familiar food.

  3. Demonstrate or encourage investigation without force.

  4. Use several safe presentation methods.

  5. Monitor the bird’s weight and droppings daily.

  6. Reduce the old food only after confirming that the bird is eating the new food.

  7. Contact the veterinarian if weight falls, droppings decrease or the bird becomes quiet.

Veterinary guidance recommends contacting the veterinarian if body weight falls by more than approximately 10% during conversion. A smaller decline may also be important in a tiny bird or one with existing disease, so do not wait mechanically for the full 10% if the bird looks unwell. (Veterinary Hospital)

Why Is Foraging So Important for Parrots?

Wild parrots do not usually walk up to one stainless-steel bowl, eat everything required in ten minutes and then stare at a wall until dinner.

They search, travel, manipulate plants, open shells, inspect surfaces, make choices and use both their feet and beaks to obtain food.

The exact natural foraging time varies widely between species and environments. In grey parrots, natural foraging budgets of approximately four to eight hours per day have been described. Captive research found that combined searching and food-extraction enrichment increased daily foraging from roughly two hours to nearly four hours. (MDPI)

Parrots have also demonstrated contrafreeloading, meaning they will sometimes work to obtain food even when equivalent food is freely available. This supports foraging as a behavioural need rather than merely a slower method of feeding. (MDPI)

Can Foraging Reduce Behaviour Problems?

It can help, although it is not a guaranteed treatment.

Foraging enrichment has increased natural feeding behaviour and reduced some repetitive oral behaviours in captive cockatoos. In grey parrots with feather-damaging behaviour, individuals spending more time using foraging devices were also more likely to show improvement in plumage condition, although feather damage has many possible causes. The lesson is not that one cardboard box cures plucking.

It is that a parrot should not have to wait until a behaviour problem develops before being given meaningful ways to search, manipulate and solve problems.

How Do You Teach a Parrot to Forage?

Start with success, not difficulty.

Level 1: Visible Food

  • Place food on clean paper rather than in a bowl.

  • Put several pellets between strips of plain paper.

  • Place a favourite reward beside an open paper cup.

  • Hang leafy vegetables where the bird can reach them.

Level 2: Partly Covered Food

  • Loosely wrap food in paper.

  • Cover part of a bowl with tissue.

  • Put rewards inside a shallow cardboard tray.

  • Place pellets in large, easily opened paper parcels.

Level 3: Simple Manipulation

  • Use drawers, lids or rotating compartments.

  • Place food inside clean cardboard tubes.

  • Hang vegetables through cage bars.

  • Use a foraging wheel the bird already understands.

Level 4: Searching and Extraction

  • Use several feeding stations.

  • Hide food in different locations.

  • Combine climbing with food retrieval.

  • Change which safe container holds the reward.

Do not begin with a sealed puzzle that an inexperienced bird cannot solve. A parrot repeatedly failing to obtain food is not receiving enrichment. It is receiving a tiny unpaid internship.

Should Some Foraging Toys Be Empty?

Not routinely during early training.

Variable food location can increase searching, but devices should contain food often enough to remain worth investigating. Continually presenting empty toys may create frustration or cause the bird to abandon them.

A new device should initially be easy and reliably productive. Difficulty can increase after the bird understands how the device works.

How Much Social Interaction Does a Parrot Need?

Most parrots are highly social animals.

Human interaction can be meaningful, but it does not reproduce every feature of communication, mutual preening, resting and security provided by another compatible bird.

Research in young Amazon parrots found that pair housing produced a more active and diverse behavioural repertoire, reduced stereotypic behaviour and did not prevent the parrots from interacting positively with people. This challenges the common fear that allowing parrots to bond with other birds will automatically destroy the human relationship. (AAV)

Does Every Single Parrot Need Another Bird Immediately?

No.

Adding another parrot is a major decision involving:

  • Infectious-disease screening

  • Quarantine

  • Species compatibility

  • Sex and reproductive risk

  • Individual temperament

  • Cage and room space

  • Resource guarding

  • The possibility that the birds may not like each other

Some parrots benefit greatly from compatible bird companionship. Others may tolerate only visual contact or require a long, carefully managed introduction.

Never place unfamiliar parrots together and hope they will negotiate the tenancy agreement themselves.

What Should Human Social Interaction Include?

Useful interaction can include:

  • Reward-based training

  • Talking and whistling

  • Supervised time on a stand

  • Foraging activities near the family

  • Recall or movement games

  • Teaching independent play

  • Calm handling

  • Participation in predictable household routines

The aim is a socially connected bird that can also tolerate short periods of independence.

A parrot should not depend on one person being physically available every waking minute. That creates an impossible job for the owner and can leave the bird distressed whenever the person goes to work, closes a door or develops the audacity to use the bathroom alone.

Is Shoulder Sitting Bad?

Shoulder sitting is not automatically hormonal.

The practical concerns are:

  • The bird may be close to the eyes and face.

  • Body language may be difficult to see.

  • Removing the bird may be difficult.

  • The bird may guard the shoulder.

  • A sudden bite can cause serious injury.

  • The bird may learn that the shoulder is available without first responding to a step-up cue.

Shoulder access is safer when the bird reliably steps up, can be moved without conflict and has no history of face-directed biting or guarding.

Banning shoulder sitting will not, by itself, solve chronic reproductive behaviour.

Can Too Much Cuddling Cause Reproductive Behaviour?

It can contribute.

Petting limited to the head and neck is less likely to resemble mating behaviour. Repeated stroking over the back, beneath the wings, near the tail or around the cloaca can be sexually stimulating for many parrots.

The AAV advises owners to avoid excessive petting and instead use daily activity, foraging and training to build the relationship. Reproductive problems are especially common in hand-raised parrots that become intensely pair-bonded to an owner.

How Much Exercise Does a Parrot Need?

Parrots are built to move.

Flight is a major source of cardiovascular, respiratory, muscular and behavioural exercise. Birds unable to fly still need daily opportunities to climb, flap, balance, walk and move between locations.

The AAV describes exercise as essential for maintaining healthy cardiovascular, respiratory, bone and muscle function. Research in budgerigars has also shown that providing more aviary space increased flight and reduced signs consistent with frustrated motivation for movement.

Safe Exercise Options

Depending on the bird’s health and flight status, exercise may include:

  • Supervised indoor flight

  • Recall training

  • Flying between two people or stations

  • Climbing ropes and branches

  • Moving between play stands

  • Wing-flapping exercises

  • Walking or climbing to obtain food

  • Large horizontal cage spaces

  • Supervised outdoor time in a secure aviary or harness

The room must first be made safe:

  • Turn off ceiling fans.

  • Close doors and windows.

  • Cover or identify large mirrors and windows.

  • Remove hot liquids and open flames.

  • Close toilets.

  • separate predatory pets.

  • Remove toxic plants, exposed wires and unsafe metals.

A bird should not be allowed to fly freely in a kitchen while food is cooking. That is less “natural exercise” and more “a tiny aviation incident waiting for an investigation.”

What if the Bird Cannot Fly?

Flight may be limited by:

  • Previous wing clipping

  • Injury

  • Arthritis

  • Obesity

  • Poor muscle condition

  • Heart or respiratory disease

  • Neurological impairment

  • Congenital deformity

Do not begin forced flight exercise in an unfit or medically compromised bird.

An avian veterinarian can help determine whether flight should be restored gradually or whether climbing, stationing and low-impact movement are safer.

How Much Sleep Does a Parrot Need?

Most companion parrots benefit from a predictable dark and quiet period, commonly around 10 to 12 hours each night.

That is a practical starting point, not a magic number that applies identically to every species and season. What matters most is that the bird can sleep without televisions, conversations, bright lights, repeated handling or household traffic continuing late into the night.

Experimental research in birds shows that artificial light at night can shorten sleep, fragment it and alter normal sleep structure. Captive budgerigar research has also found that night lighting can alter body mass, melatonin measurements and reproductive outcomes. (the UWA Profiles and Research Repository)

Does Every Parrot Need a Separate Sleeping Cage?

No.

A sleeping cage may help when:

  • The main enclosure is in a late-night living area.

  • Household lighting cannot be reduced.

  • The bird is repeatedly disturbed.

  • A separate quiet room is available.

  • The bird transfers calmly between cages.

It may be unnecessary when the main enclosure already receives a reliable period of darkness and quiet.

A sleeping cage should not be introduced so abruptly that bedtime becomes a nightly capture operation.

Should You Cover the Cage?

Covering can help some birds, but it is optional.

A cover must:

  • Allow ventilation

  • Remain out of chewing reach

  • Avoid loose threads

  • Not create overheating

  • Not turn the enclosure into a nest-like cavity for a reproductively active bird

  • Not frighten a bird prone to night panic

The room itself should still become quiet and dark. A thin cloth does not cancel the television, kitchen lights and midnight conversation occurring two metres away.

Does UV Light Matter for Parrots?

Appropriate ultraviolet exposure can support vitamin D production, calcium metabolism and normal visual experience.

Most windows filter out much of the beneficial UVB component of sunlight. Safe outdoor exposure or carefully installed avian UV lighting may therefore be useful, particularly for birds with poor dietary history, metabolic bone concerns or chronic egg laying.

UV lighting can also cause harm when:

  • The bulb is too close.

  • The output is excessive.

  • The bird cannot move into shade.

  • The bulb emits unsuitable wavelengths.

  • Exposure continues despite squinting or skin irritation.

Any artificial UV setup should follow the manufacturer’s current instructions and ideally be reviewed with an avian veterinarian. The lamp should provide a gradient so the bird can move away.

A bright household bulb labelled “full spectrum” does not automatically provide useful UVB.

What Housing Does a Parrot Need?

The enclosure should be a safe home base, not the bird’s entire world.

A suitable enclosure should:

  • Allow full wing extension without touching bars or toys

  • Provide horizontal movement

  • Use safe bar spacing

  • Be constructed from non-toxic materials

  • Contain several carefully positioned perches

  • Allow access to clean food and water

  • Provide toys without creating entanglement hazards

  • Be easy to clean

  • Allow the bird to avoid constant household disturbance

More usable space is generally better. Long, horizontal dimensions are especially important for species that fly between perches rather than primarily climbing.

What Perches Are Best?

Use several perches with different diameters, shapes and textures.

Natural, pesticide-free branches are often excellent because they distribute pressure across different parts of the feet and provide safe chewing opportunities.

Avoid making one smooth dowel the bird’s only standing surface. The AAV warns that uniform dowels can create painful foot lesions and that sandpaper perch covers can cause sores. Pododermatitis was also the most common skin disorder in a large 2025 retrospective study of captive psittacines.

Check the feet regularly for:

  • Redness

  • Smooth shiny areas

  • Dark scabs

  • Swelling

  • Loss of normal scale pattern

  • Reluctance to grip

  • Holding one foot up persistently

  • Difficulty moving between perches

A nail-trimming perch should not double as a foot sander for twelve hours every night.

How Should the Cage Be Cleaned?

Daily care should include:

  • Replacing cage paper

  • Washing food and water bowls

  • Removing spoiled fresh food

  • Checking droppings

  • Removing damaged toy components

  • Cleaning obvious contamination

Plain paper is useful as a cage liner because it allows owners to monitor the colour, amount and consistency of droppings. Loose corn-cob bedding, wood chips and similar substrates can conceal waste and retain moisture.

Do not clean bird equipment in food-preparation sinks where avoidable. Wash hands after handling cages, droppings and bowls. (CDC)

How Often Should a Parrot Bathe?

Offer bathing regularly and allow the bird to choose their preferred method.

Options include:

  • A shallow dish

  • Fine mist

  • Wet leafy vegetables

  • A secure shower perch away from direct pressure

  • Gentle running water

The AAV recommends bathing or showering at least once or twice weekly for birds that tolerate it, with some birds choosing to bathe much more often. Use plain water unless an avian veterinarian has prescribed something different.

Bathing supports feather and skin maintenance, but it does not treat:

  • Mites

  • Bacterial infection

  • Fungal disease

  • PBFD

  • Feather-damaging behaviour

  • Nutritional feather abnormalities

A bird with abnormal feathers needs diagnosis, not increasingly determined misting.

How Should Parrots Be Trained?

Training should use clear, reward-based methods.

The AAV recommends reward-based training over forced or punishment-based techniques because force and punishment can create fear, avoidance and aggression.

Useful foundational behaviours include:

  • Step up

  • Step down

  • Station on a perch

  • Touch a target

  • Enter a carrier

  • Stand on a scale

  • Accept an oral syringe

  • Allow a towel to approach

  • Move between locations

  • Permit foot, wing and beak inspection

How Should Step-Up Be Taught?

Do not press a hand or perch firmly into the bird’s abdomen until they lose balance and are forced to step.

A better method is:

  1. Present a stable hand or perch below the lower chest.

  2. Give a consistent cue.

  3. Allow the bird to lean or lift one foot.

  4. Mark the correct attempt.

  5. Reward the step.

  6. Practise in short sessions.

  7. Teach step-down with equal care.

A target can help position a nervous bird without pushing them physically.

The goal is voluntary participation, not teaching the bird that “step up” means a hand will continue advancing until surrender becomes mechanically convenient.

What Is Station Training?

Station training teaches the bird to remain on a specific perch, mat or location until released.

It can help with:

  • Opening the cage safely

  • Cleaning

  • Preparing food

  • Managing multiple birds

  • Reducing shoulder guarding

  • Veterinary examination

  • Medication

  • Visitors

  • Emergency transport

A station gives the bird a clear behaviour to perform rather than merely telling them what not to do.

What Causes Reproductive or “Hormonal” Behaviour?

Reproductive behaviour is controlled by more than one factor.

Important influences can include:

  • Day length and artificial lighting

  • Abundant calorie-dense food

  • Nest cavities

  • Nesting materials

  • A mate or strongly bonded person

  • Repeated full-body petting

  • Regurgitation and courtship interactions

  • Temperature and humidity

  • Species and individual genetics

Avian reproductive cycles are shaped by photoperiod, food availability, social signals and access to nesting sites. In captivity, stable temperatures, long artificial days and continual access to rich food can permit reproductive behaviour to continue outside the normal seasonal pattern. (Merck Veterinary Manual)

What Does Reproductive Behaviour Look Like?

Possible signs include:

  • Regurgitating towards a person or object

  • Masturbation

  • Seeking dark cupboards, boxes or blankets

  • Shredding nesting material

  • Guarding a cage, drawer or person

  • Tail lifting or crouching

  • Increased aggression

  • Excessive contact calling

  • Repeated egg laying

  • Cloacal rubbing

  • Feeding toys or mirrors

Not every bite or loud vocalisation is hormonal. Pain, fear, poor training, sleep disruption and medical disease must also be considered.

Does Warm or Soft Food Cause Hormonal Behaviour?

Not automatically.

Warm food is not an endocrine switch. However, repeated spoon-feeding or hand-feeding of warm soft food can resemble courtship feeding in an intensely pair-bonded bird. Continual access to highly palatable, calorie-dense food may also support reproductive readiness.

The concern is the complete pattern:

  • Who is feeding the bird?

  • How is it offered?

  • Does the bird regurgitate back?

  • Is the bird guarding the person?

  • Are there nest-like spaces?

  • Is the bird receiving prolonged light?

  • Is egg laying occurring?

Do not ban every cooked vegetable because the bird once looked affectionate near a bowl of sweet potato.

How Can Excessive Reproductive Behaviour Be Reduced?

A practical plan may include:

  • Providing a consistent dark sleeping period

  • Removing access to boxes, drawers and dark cavities

  • Avoiding petting over the back, wings, tail and cloaca

  • Redirecting courtship into training or foraging

  • Controlling calorie-dense food

  • Removing mirrors or guarded objects

  • Encouraging independent activity

  • Reviewing social arrangements

  • Avoiding repeated hand-feeding interactions

  • Arranging veterinary examination for chronic egg laying

Birds laying repeated eggs may require medical treatment as well as environmental changes. Chronic laying can contribute to calcium depletion, weakness, fractures, egg binding, oviduct disease and cloacal prolapse. Extended photoperiods over 12 hours are commonly reported in affected birds. (Merck Veterinary Manual)

Do not simply remove each egg immediately without veterinary guidance. In some birds, repeated removal stimulates replacement laying.

When Is a Behaviour Problem Actually a Medical Problem?

A change in behaviour should never be labelled boredom, hormones or attitude until important medical causes have been considered.

Feather-damaging behaviour is particularly important because it can be behavioural, medical or both. Pododermatitis and feather damage were the two most common dermatological conditions in a large psittacine referral population, and many affected birds had originally presented for something unrelated to the skin. The parrot:

  • Maintains a stable weight

  • Eats and drinks normally

  • Produces normal droppings

  • Is active and interactive

  • Has no skin, feather or foot damage

  • Shows a manageable preference for certain foods or activities
