The Brussels Griffon, or Griffon Bruxellois, originated in 19th‑century Brussels, Belgium as rat-catcher companions, descending from Smousje, Affenpinscher, Pug, and Toy Spaniel ancestors. They gained notoriety in European royal courts and were first registered by the AKC in 1910.

3. 🧠 Temperament & Personality

  • Extremely affectionate Velcro dogs”—devoted to owners, dislike being left alone
  • Intelligent, alert, quirky, with a "comically self-important" charm

  • Moderate watchdog instinct—alert and barks but generally friendly; early socialization recommended

4. 🏡 Exercise & Lifestyle Needs

5. 🎓 Training & Enrichment

6. 💉 Health & Lifespan

  • Life Expectancy: ~12–15 years (UK study avg 13.3 years)
  • Common Conditions: Brachycephalic syndrome (snoring, airway issues), patella luxation, hip dysplasia, cataracts, PRA, dental crowding
  • Serious Risks: Syringomyelia & Chiari‑like malformation are breed concerns—screening advised
  • Care: Regular vet visits, dental hygiene, ophthalmologic and orthopedic screenings, weight management

7. 🛁 Grooming & Coat Maintenance

  • Smooth coat: Brush twice weekly.
  • Rough coat: Brush weekly, hand-strip every 3–4 months or shape with a Schnauzer cut
  • Clean eyes frequently, brush teeth multiple times weekly, trim nails, maintain ear hygiene

8. ✅ Ideal Owner & Home Match

  • Best For: Attentive individuals, couples, or seniors who can be present; home companions rather than outdoor dogs
  • Less Ideal For: Homes with very young children or lack of structured schedule; homes seeking robust exercise dogs

9. 🌟 Summary

The Brussels Griffon is a captivating, affectionate, and expressive companion—small in size but big in personality. With consistent training, proper health and grooming care, and lots of human interaction, they thrive in loving homes tailored to their sensitive nature.
