A horse that was normal yesterday may suddenly develop a hind leg so swollen that it resembles a tree trunk.
The limb may be hot, extremely painful and difficult to bend. The horse may barely bear weight, develop a fever or become systemically unwell. This is very different from an ordinary stocked-up leg after standing in a stable.
