How this pet anaesthetic risk calculator works
The calculator reviews information commonly considered during a pre-anaesthetic assessment: species, age, body condition, current stability, known heart or kidney disease, other health problems, medication complexity, procedure urgency and procedure size. It then creates an educational planning score and highlights the factors worth discussing with the veterinary team.
Anaesthetic and anaesthesia are the Australian and British spellings; anesthetic and anesthesia are the US equivalents. They refer to the same veterinary planning topic on this page.
Owner mode explains the result in plain language. Clinical mode adds a provisional ASA physical-status discussion prompt and population-level study context. Neither mode diagnoses disease, predicts an individual outcome or replaces the veterinarian who examines the animal and plans the anaesthetic.

How veterinarians reduce anaesthetic risk
Risk cannot be reduced to zero, but a careful plan can identify preventable problems and prepare the team to respond quickly. Depending on the patient and procedure, that plan may include:
- A complete history and physical examination, including previous anaesthetic reactions, current medicines, allergies, appetite, breathing and recent illness.
- Targeted testing selected from the examination and procedure. This may include blood tests, urinalysis, blood pressure, ECG, chest imaging or echocardiography. Not every animal needs every test.
- Stabilisation before induction when possible, such as treating dehydration, shock, breathing difficulty, anaemia, electrolyte abnormalities, pain or low blood glucose.
- An individualised anaesthetic and analgesic plan that accounts for disease, airway, species, medicines, procedure and expected pain.
- Continuous trained monitoring of oxygenation, ventilation, circulation and temperature, using appropriate equipment and a dedicated team member.
- Close recovery observation. Many complications occur after the procedure, so airway, breathing, temperature, comfort and alertness still need active monitoring.

What does an ASA status mean in veterinary anaesthesia?
ASA physical status is a clinician-assigned description of the patient's health before anaesthesia, from ASA I for a healthy patient through ASA V for a moribund patient. An E suffix identifies an emergency. It is not a percentage chance of death and it is only one part of risk assessment. The treating veterinarian must assign the final status after reviewing the history and examining the patient.

Is anaesthesia safe for an older dog or cat?
Age alone is not a disease. Current health, frailty, underlying conditions, procedure urgency, monitoring and recovery care are usually more informative than the birthday alone. Many senior pets can undergo anaesthesia with an appropriately tailored plan.
Does a heart murmur make anaesthesia unsafe?
Not automatically. Its significance depends on the cause, stage, symptoms, species and proposed procedure. Further cardiac assessment, which may include echocardiography, may be recommended before an elective anaesthetic.
Does my pet need blood tests before anaesthesia?
Testing is individualised. Blood tests can reveal anaemia, glucose changes, electrolyte problems or altered organ values, but normal results do not remove every risk and blood tests are not the only part of assessment.
Is sedation safer than general anaesthesia?
Not always. Sedation can still affect breathing, airway protection, blood pressure and temperature. The safest approach depends on the patient, the procedure and how reliably pain, movement and the airway can be managed.
Is dental anaesthesia risky for a senior dog or cat?
The dental procedure, duration, airway protection and the animal's health all matter. Untreated dental disease also carries pain and health consequences, so the decision should compare the benefit of treatment with the individual anaesthetic risk rather than considering age alone.
Should rabbits or guinea pigs be fasted before anaesthesia?
Rabbits and guinea pigs should not undergo prolonged fasting. Follow the specific instructions from the treating exotics team, because preparation differs from dogs and cats and may vary with the planned procedure.
What should I tell my vet before my pet is anaesthetised?
Share every current medicine and supplement, previous anaesthetic problems, coughing or breathing changes, fainting, vomiting, appetite changes, allergies, pregnancy possibility and any new illness. Never stop a prescribed medicine unless the treating veterinarian tells you to.
