Mares are naturally programmed to become reproductively active as daylight increases. That works well for foals intended to arrive in spring, but it does not always suit racing and breeding programs trying to produce foals early in the official breeding year.

Artificial light has been used for decades to bring the mare’s first ovulation forward. Blue light masks offer a portable alternative that may allow mares to remain at pasture rather than being brought under stable lights every evening.

They can work, but they are not a fertility cure, they do not guarantee pregnancy, and the timing needs to be planned well before the intended breeding date.

  • 14 of 16 mares under stable lights

  • 20 of 25 mares wearing blue light masks

A later small study on Jeju Island compared blue light masks with stable lighting. Problems arise when:

  • The mask repeatedly comes off

  • Reduce all stress

  • Ovarian size and activity

  • Follicle number and diameter

  • Follicle progression

  • Uterine oedema

  • Cervical relaxation

The mare has uterine disease, abnormal ovaries, reproductive tract damage, systemic illness or infertility during the normal breeding season.

Already Cycling Normally

The mare has regular ovulations despite the season.
