Do Calming Supplements Work for Horses? What the Evidence Actually Shows

The equine calming-supplement aisle makes an appealing promise: add a powder or paste, wait a little while, and your nervous horse will become calmer, safer and more focused.

Sometimes owners do notice a difference. The difficulty is working out whether the product genuinely reduced anxiety, mildly sedated the horse, corrected a dietary deficiency, or was simply given at the same time that training and familiarity began to improve the behaviour.

The scientific evidence is much less convincing than the marketing. Some specific products have produced modest or preliminary results, but no commonly used nutritional ingredient has consistently transformed fearful or dangerous behaviour across well-controlled equine studies.

Quick Answer

Most calming supplements for horses have limited, mixed or inconsistent evidence.

Magnesium may be beneficial when a horse’s diet is genuinely deficient, but most common feeds already provide adequate magnesium and supplementation has not produced repeatable calming effects. Acute tryptophan supplementation has failed to reduce reactivity in controlled studies. Alpha-casozepine and some botanical blends have shown modest or preliminary effects in small trials, but they are not reliable treatments for severe anxiety.

Acepromazine is different. It is a prescription tranquiliser that can reduce physical reactivity, but it is not a nutritional supplement, does not provide reliable pain relief and does not prove that the horse feels less afraid. What Is the Difference Between Calm, Sedated and Less Reactive?

These terms are often treated as though they mean the same thing. They do not.

A Calmer Horse

A genuinely calmer horse should be able to:

  • Notice the trigger without immediately panicking

  • Continue processing information

  • Respond to familiar cues

  • Maintain safe coordination

  • Recover more quickly

  • Learn from the experience

  • Show less avoidance during later sessions

A Sedated or Tranquilised Horse

A tranquilised horse may:

  • Move more slowly

  • Carry the head lower

  • React less dramatically

  • Appear quieter

  • Have reduced coordination or balance

  • Remain internally fearful despite showing less movement

This distinction matters enormously.

A horse that is frightened of a trailer but physically slower because of medication has not necessarily learned that the trailer is safe. When the medication is absent, the original response may return.

A Less Reactive Horse

A study may report a lower heart rate or slower startle response without proving that the horse experienced less fear.

Heart rate can be influenced by movement, sedation, fitness, temperature, individual temperament and the nature of the task. Cortisol is also affected by exercise, timing, handling and environmental conditions.

The strongest evidence comes from several measures agreeing, such as:

  • Less avoidance

  • Safer behaviour

  • Lower physiological arousal

  • Faster recovery

  • Improved ability to learn

  • Repeatable improvement across different situations

One lower heart-rate measurement is interesting. It is not the psychological equivalent of interviewing the horse.

What Did the University of Guelph Study Actually Show?

The study frequently used to promote magnesium-based calming products was published in 2017.

Six horses were tested in a crossover design. Each horse received, on separate test days:

  • A placebo paste

  • A specific nutritional paste containing magnesium citrate and thiamine

  • A single dose of acepromazine

Thirty minutes later, the horses completed a series of tasks involving:

  1. Walking onto a weighbridge

  2. Loading into a trailer

  3. Travelling alone for approximately 25 minutes

  4. Having a jugular blood sample collected

  5. Entering a stable containing an unfamiliar object

The researchers measured heart rate, plasma cortisol and how long the horses took to complete each task. (ScienceDirect)

The Main Result

Both acepromazine and the nutritional paste reduced the average heart rate during the first task, which occurred approximately 30 minutes after administration.

Neither treatment produced a significant effect during the later tasks.

The study did not demonstrate that both treatments consistently reduced fear throughout trailer loading, transport, blood sampling and novel-object exposure. The authors also stated that the cortisol findings required further research. (ScienceDirect)

Why the Result Must Be Interpreted Carefully

The trial involved only six horses. With a sample that small, one unusually difficult or unusually responsive horse can influence the overall result substantially.

The tested nutritional product also contained both magnesium citrate and thiamine in a specific paste formulation. The findings cannot be used to prove that:

  • Magnesium alone was responsible

  • Every form of magnesium works

  • A powder fed daily produces the same result

  • Other products with different ingredients are equivalent

  • The product will control severe anxiety or dangerous behaviour

  • The horse was emotionally calmer rather than merely less physiologically reactive

The research was partly funded by the company supplying the product, although the authors reported that the funder was not involved in designing, analysing or writing the study. Industry funding does not invalidate a result, but it makes independent replication particularly valuable. (ScienceDirect)

The Defensible Conclusion

The study suggests that one specific magnesium and thiamine paste may briefly reduce average heart rate during an early management task.

It does not justify the broader claim that magnesium supplements work as well as acepromazine for equine anxiety.

Does Magnesium Calm Horses?

Magnesium is essential for normal nerve, muscle and enzyme function.

Severe experimental magnesium deficiency has produced nervousness, muscle tremors, incoordination, sweating, collapse and other serious abnormalities in horses. However, the Merck Veterinary Manual notes that commonly used feeds generally contain magnesium above the recommended requirement and that oversupplementation is more likely than an uncomplicated deficiency. It also concludes that evidence for magnesium’s calming effects in horses remains inconclusive. (Merck Veterinary Manual)

Why Do So Many Owners Report That Magnesium Helps?

Several explanations are possible:

  • The original diet was genuinely low or poorly balanced

  • The supplement replaced a high-starch feed

  • The horse was simultaneously given more turnout or forage

  • The horse became familiar with the stressful task

  • Training improved

  • The owner expected improvement and interpreted behaviour differently

  • The horse experienced natural day-to-day variation

  • Another ingredient in the finished product affected the result

Owner observations matter, but they cannot identify which explanation is correct without a controlled comparison.

What Did the Magnesium Reaction-Speed Studies Find?

A very small initial study involving six Standardbred geldings reported slower reactions after magnesium aspartate supplementation.

A later follow-up included 18 horses from three groups: Thoroughbreds, Arabians and ponies. The horses received control diets, magnesium aspartate or sodium aspartate. Acepromazine reduced reaction speed and increased sedation, but the dietary treatments produced no significant overall effect after either one or seven days.

Should Magnesium Be Tested Before Supplementing?

A blood magnesium result does not always provide a complete picture of dietary intake or total-body magnesium status. The more practical first step is usually to examine the entire ration, including:

  • Forage analysis

  • Concentrate or balancer intake

  • Existing electrolyte products

  • Mineral blocks

  • Joint and hoof supplements

  • Calming powders

  • Actual amounts consumed

Stacking several products can quietly turn a sensible ration into a mineral experiment.

Can Too Much Magnesium Be Harmful?

Ordinary oral supplementation is unlikely to cause severe toxicity in a healthy horse when used appropriately, but unnecessary excess may interfere with overall mineral balance and can contribute to gastrointestinal upset depending on the formulation.

Very high magnesium exposure can cause weakness, sweating, reduced neuromuscular function, abnormal heart and breathing rates, recumbency and collapse. More powder is therefore not a more enthusiastic version of good nutrition. (Merck Veterinary Manual)

Does Tryptophan Calm Horses?

Tryptophan is an amino acid involved in serotonin synthesis, which makes it sound biologically attractive as a calming ingredient.

The equine evidence is not convincing.

A blinded randomised crossover trial involving 60 mature horses tested single oral tryptophan doses of 30, 60 and 120 mg/kg. Blood concentrations increased, confirming that the horses absorbed the supplement, but there was no reduction in reaction speed following a startle stimulus.

The researchers concluded that a single oral dose was not an effective equine calmative. (ScienceDirect)

A separate study involving 16 young stallions and 12 young mares tested a commercial product containing 6 grams of tryptophan. There was no significant improvement in approach to novel objects, heart rate, behaviour or ease of handling. (ScienceDirect)

Practical Interpretation

Tryptophan should not be relied upon as an acute solution for:

  • Trailer loading

  • Separation panic

  • Clipping

  • Farrier appointments

  • Competition anxiety

  • Dangerous startle responses

It may be included in a balanced feed for legitimate nutritional reasons. That is different from proving that an extra dose will reliably calm a fearful horse.

Does Alpha-Casozepine Work?

Alpha-casozepine is a peptide derived from milk casein and is marketed for anxiety and stress support in several species.

The equine evidence is mixed.

Mild Health-Care Aversions

One study selected 10 mares with mild aversions to routine health-care procedures. Five received alpha-casozepine for five days, while five matched controls received a control supplement.

The treated horses showed modest improvements in compliance and apparent comfort during several procedures. However, the study was very small and involved mild, specific aversions rather than dangerous panic or generalised anxiety. (ovid.com)

Trailer Loading

A later crossover study involved 10 horses during loading and confinement in a horse lorry.

Alpha-casozepine did not produce significant differences in heart rate, heart-rate variability, salivary cortisol, temperature measurements or most behavioural indicators. Loading time was statistically shorter, but the median difference was only 0.45 seconds.

The researchers concluded that the product did not meaningfully improve the horses’ ability to cope with loading and confinement at the tested dose. (ScienceDirect)

Practical Interpretation

Alpha-casozepine may provide a modest benefit for selected horses facing mild, predictable procedures.

It should not be expected to control:

  • Severe trailer panic

  • Bolting

  • Rearing

  • Dangerous separation distress

  • Aggression

  • Behaviour caused by pain

What About Botanical and Multi-Ingredient Calming Products?

Multi-ingredient formulas are difficult to evaluate because they may contain:

  • Magnesium

  • Thiamine

  • Herbal extracts

  • Yeast products

  • Amino acids

  • Essential oils

  • Casein-derived peptides

  • Proprietary blends

Even when a finished product performs well in one study, the result applies to that formulation, dose, duration and group of horses. It does not validate every individual ingredient or competing product.

A 2023 study tested a blend containing citrus botanical oils, magnesium and yeast in 14 young horses over 59 days. Treated horses showed trends towards lower cortisol during trailering and a slower startle response, but the differences did not reach conventional statistical significance. Most other outcomes did not differ between groups.

The findings were promising enough to justify further research, but not strong enough to establish reliable clinical effectiveness. (PubMed)

Proprietary Blends Are Particularly Difficult

A label that lists “proprietary calming complex” without individual quantities makes it difficult to determine:

  • Whether the dose matches available research

  • Whether ingredients are duplicated elsewhere in the ration

  • Which component caused an adverse reaction

  • Whether the formulation changes between batches

  • Whether the product contains a competition-prohibited substance

Transparent labels are not glamorous, but neither is discovering that the scientific-sounding powder contains mostly flavouring and optimism.

What About CBD, GABA and Phenibut?

These ingredients create both veterinary and competition concerns.

CBD

The FDA has not approved cannabis or CBD for use in animals and cannot assure the safety, effectiveness or appropriate dose of animal CBD products. In 2025, the FDA issued warning letters involving CBD oils and pellets specifically marketed for horses. (U.S. Food and Drug Administration)

CBD may also create competition-rule problems and contamination concerns. A product marketed as “hemp” or “natural” should not be assumed to be permitted or drug-free.

GABA and Phenibut

Under current USEF penalty guidance, GABA and phenibut are examples of Category IV prohibited substances. These ingredients may appear in products marketed as nutritional or natural calmers, despite their ability to alter performance. (US Equestrian)

Do not use them as casual feed additives, particularly in competition horses.

Does Acepromazine Treat Anxiety?

Acepromazine is a phenothiazine tranquiliser used by veterinarians for selected procedures, transport situations, anaesthetic protocols and other clinical circumstances.

It can reduce environmental reactivity and visible movement. It should not automatically be described as a true anti-anxiety treatment.

What Acepromazine Can Do

Depending on dose, route and individual response, acepromazine can:

  • Produce tranquilisation

  • Lower the head

  • Reduce spontaneous movement

  • Reduce reaction speed

  • Make some handling procedures easier

  • Produce prolonged effects

What It Does Not Reliably Do

Acepromazine does not:

  • Teach a horse to load

  • Correct social separation

  • Diagnose the reason for the behaviour

  • Provide consistent analgesia

  • Guarantee that the horse feels emotionally safe

  • Make an unsafe trailer or handling setup safe

  • Replace pain treatment

Controlled equine studies found predictable sedation but no consistent antinociceptive effect. Acepromazine should therefore never be used to make a painful horse look easier to handle while leaving the pain untreated. (PubMed)

What Are the Risks of Acepromazine?

Low Blood Pressure

Acepromazine dilates peripheral blood vessels and can lower arterial blood pressure. The severity and duration vary between horses and according to dose and route.

In one study, blood pressure remained significantly reduced for more than six hours following a particular intramuscular protocol. This is why acepromazine requires extra caution in horses that are dehydrated, bleeding, systemically unwell or already hypotensive. (PubMed)

Impaired Balance and Response

A tranquilised horse may be slower to react but also less capable of recovering balance.

That can be particularly relevant during:

  • Loading

  • Unloading

  • Travel

  • Difficult footing

  • Steep ramps

  • Herd introductions

  • Handling of an injured horse

The fact that the horse is quieter does not mean the environment has become safer.

Penile Prolapse

Acepromazine commonly causes temporary penile protrusion in male horses.

A retrospective study involving 575 male horses receiving acepromazine around anaesthesia found temporary prolapse in 2.4%, generally lasting between 30 minutes and four hours. Prolonged or permanent dysfunction was extremely uncommon, with the estimated risk of permanent dysfunction no greater than approximately one in 10,000 uses in that clinical context. (Beva)

The risk should be described accurately. It is not common enough to declare acepromazine forbidden in every gelding or stallion, but persistent swelling, dryness, discolouration or failure to retract requires prompt veterinary attention.

Competition Prohibition

Acepromazine is prohibited during competition under major equestrian drug-control systems.

Current USEF guidance places short-acting sedatives including acepromazine in Category II.b, reflecting their potential to manipulate performance. For samples collected after May 31, 2026, qualifying positive findings can also result in the horse being suspended for the same period as the responsible person. (US Equestrian)

Do not use an old withdrawal-time chart or assume that a dose given several days earlier is automatically safe. Dose, route, repeated administration, individual metabolism and the current rules all matter.

Is the Horse Anxious, or Is Something Hurting?

Before reaching for a calming product, ask why the behaviour is occurring.

Sudden anxiety, resistance or aggression may reflect:

  • Hoof pain

  • Back or neck pain

  • Poor saddle fit

  • Dental disease

  • Gastric or intestinal discomfort

  • Eye pain or reduced vision

  • Ear disease

  • Respiratory difficulty

  • Neurological disease

  • Reproductive behaviour

  • Urinary or preputial discomfort

  • Fatigue or overtraining

  • Inappropriate equipment

In a study of 150 horses investigated for poor ridden performance, only 30% were continuously lame. Behaviour scores fell substantially after diagnostic anaesthesia reduced musculoskeletal pain, demonstrating that the absence of obvious lameness does not exclude pain. (PubMed)

Clues That Pain May Be Involved

Pain becomes more suspicious when the behaviour:

  • Began suddenly

  • Is progressively worsening

  • Occurs only during one gait or movement

  • Is stronger in one direction

  • Appears during girthing, mounting or saddling

  • Is associated with short steps or reluctance to turn

  • Occurs when the head or ears are touched

  • Is accompanied by weight loss, poor appetite or recurrent colic

  • Is associated with coughing, breathing difficulty or poor recovery

  • Does not improve as the horse becomes familiar with the situation

A horse cannot be supplemented out of a painful back, ulcerated eye or laminitic foot.

Who Might Reasonably Have a Supplement Trial?

Lower-Risk Candidate

A supplement trial may be reasonable when the horse:

  • Is physically healthy

  • Has mild, predictable nervousness

  • Remains safe to handle

  • Can still learn and respond to cues

  • Has an appropriate diet and management program

  • Is already undergoing gradual training

  • Is not expected to compete under rules prohibiting the ingredients

The supplement should be treated as a possible adjunct, not the centre of the treatment plan.

Moderate-Risk Case

Veterinary and behavioural review is more important when the horse:

  • Regularly refuses to load

  • Develops significant separation distress

  • Becomes difficult for routine veterinary or farrier care

  • Sweats, paws or calls for prolonged periods

  • Has worsening competition behaviour

  • Has an uncertain diet or several overlapping supplements

  • Requires the product repeatedly to remain manageable

A supplement can be trialled after physical disease and management problems have been reviewed.

High-Risk Case

Do not rely on a supplement when the horse:

  • Bolts

  • Rears

  • Strikes

  • Kicks

  • Crushes handlers

  • Attempts to jump fences

  • Panics inside a trailer

  • Has sudden unexplained aggression

  • Shows pain, visual changes or neurological abnormalities

These horses require diagnosis, a safety plan and appropriately qualified professional involvement.

Critical Situation

Treat the behaviour as an emergency when it occurs with:

  • Collapse

  • Seizure activity

  • Incoordination

  • Apparent blindness

  • Severe colic

  • Non-weight-bearing lameness

  • Breathing difficulty

  • High fever and depression

  • Choke

  • Uncontrolled haemorrhage

  • Abnormal awareness

The appropriate treatment is not a larger scoop of calming powder.

How Should You Trial a Calming Supplement Properly?

1. Define the Exact Problem

Avoid vague goals such as “make him calmer.”

Record something measurable, such as:

  • Time required to load

  • Number of refusals

  • Maximum safe approach distance

  • Duration of calling after separation

  • Number of startle reactions during a ride

  • Heart-rate recovery

  • Ability to stand for the farrier

  • Whether the horse can take food and respond to cues

2. Establish a Baseline

Record the behaviour over several comparable sessions before introducing the supplement.

One unusually good or bad day should not determine the result.

3. Review the Diet

Calculate all sources of:

  • Magnesium

  • Tryptophan

  • Thiamine

  • Herbal ingredients

  • Electrolytes

  • Vitamins and minerals

A forage analysis and ration review are usually more valuable than adding a sixth tub to a shelf already resembling a small feed-store branch.

4. Rule Out Pain and Disease

Arrange veterinary assessment when the behaviour is new, severe, escalating or task-specific.

Do not wait for months of supplement failure before examining the horse.

5. Change One Thing at a Time

Do not simultaneously:

  • Change the feed

  • Move stable

  • add turnout

  • Start a supplement

  • Replace the saddle

  • Begin a new training program

When everything changes together, nobody knows what worked.

6. Choose a Transparent Product

Prefer a product that provides:

  • Exact ingredient quantities

  • Batch identification

  • Manufacturer contact details

  • Quality-control information

  • Independent testing where available

  • Clear competition guidance

  • No hidden proprietary blend

A label saying “veterinarian formulated” is a marketing statement, not a clinical trial.

7. Test It at Home First

Never give an unfamiliar product for the first time immediately before:

  • Competition

  • Transport

  • A veterinary procedure

  • Clipping

  • A herd introduction

  • A difficult ride

Observe the horse in a controlled environment before increasing the stakes.

8. Set a Review Date

Decide in advance how long the trial will run and what counts as improvement.

Some products are marketed for single-event use, while others are intended for daily administration. Follow the product instructions and veterinarian’s advice, but do not continue indefinitely because stopping feels like admitting the tub may not be doing much.

9. Stop if Adverse Signs Develop

Discontinue the product and contact your veterinarian if the horse develops:

  • Diarrhoea

  • Marked lethargy

  • Weakness

  • Incoordination

  • Reduced appetite

  • Colic signs

  • Tremors

  • Abnormal sweating

  • An unusually slow or abnormal response

  • Worsening behaviour

10. Continue the Training Plan

A supplement should create a slightly better learning environment, not replace learning.

The useful question is:

Does this product help the horse remain calm enough to participate in a well-designed training session?

It should not be:

Can this product make the horse too quiet to object?

Are Calming Supplements Safe for Competition Horses?

Never assume that “natural,” “herbal,” “nutritional” or “drug-free” means competition-safe.

USEF warns that supplement formulas and labels may change, that products are not held to the same standards as approved drugs, and that prohibited substances have been detected in products without being declared on the label. Competitors remain responsible for what is found in the horse. (US Equestrian)

Animal products marketed as dietary supplements also do not fall into the same special federal regulatory category as human dietary supplements in the United States. Depending on composition and intended use, they are regulated as animal food or animal drugs. (U.S. Food and Drug Administration)

Before using a calmer:

  1. Check the current rules for the exact competition authority.

  2. Check the full current ingredient label on the physical container.

  3. Ask the manufacturer about batch testing.

  4. Discuss the product with your veterinarian.

  5. Contact the governing body directly when anything is uncertain.

  6. Keep the container, lot number and purchase record.

Do not rely solely on a social-media comment, retailer’s “show-safe” badge or withdrawal time copied from an old forum.

When Is This an Emergency?

Contact a veterinarian urgently when nervous or abnormal behaviour occurs with:

  • Sudden collapse

  • Seizures

  • Incoordination or repeated falling

  • Apparent blindness or collision with objects

  • Severe or escalating colic

  • Rapid or laboured breathing

  • Choke or difficulty swallowing

  • Severe lameness

  • Strong digital pulses and reluctance to turn

  • High fever

  • Profound depression

  • Uncontrolled sweating or heat stress

  • Sudden dangerous aggression with abnormal awareness

After medication or supplementation, seek immediate help if the horse develops:

  • Facial or throat swelling

  • Difficulty breathing

  • Collapse

  • Severe weakness

  • Tremors or seizures

  • Marked incoordination

  • Persistent penile prolapse with swelling, dryness or discolouration

  • Severe colic or diarrhoea

  • An unexpectedly profound or prolonged response

What Should You Do During an Acute Panic Episode?

  1. Stop the task. Do not continue loading, clipping or training while the horse is escalating.

  2. Protect people first. Move handlers away from striking, kicking and crushing zones.

  3. Reduce stimulation. Remove dogs, machinery, crowds and unnecessary horses.

  4. Do not trap the horse. Fear can become more dangerous when the horse has no escape route.

  5. Check for injury or illness. Look at gait, breathing, sweating, eyes, awareness and abdominal behaviour.

  6. Do not punish the horse. Punishment may make the trigger and the handler part of the fear association.

  7. Do not administer leftover medication. Call the veterinarian for an individual plan.

  8. Record the episode from a safe distance. A video can help distinguish fear, pain, lameness and neurological abnormalities.

Common Mistakes With Equine Calming Products

Assuming Lower Heart Rate Proves Lower Anxiety

A physiological change can be useful, but it does not establish the horse’s emotional experience by itself.

Expecting Magnesium to Fix Every Nervous Horse

Magnesium deficiency is not the default cause of reactivity, and most common equine feeds provide adequate amounts.

Stacking Several Calmers

Multiple products may duplicate minerals and amino acids or introduce prohibited ingredients. They also make it impossible to identify which product helped or caused a reaction.

Using Acepromazine as a Painkiller

Acepromazine tranquilises. It does not provide reliable analgesia.

Sedating Before Trailer Training

Medication may occasionally be needed for necessary transport under veterinary direction. Routine sedation does not teach the horse to load or balance safely.

Giving the Product for the First Time at a Show

The response may be absent, excessive or completely different from what the owner expected.

Buying by Ingredient Name Alone

Research on one specific magnesium, botanical or peptide formulation does not prove that every product containing that word will work.

Ignoring Pain

A sudden “anxious” horse may be a painful horse asking the same question more loudly each week.

Trusting “Natural” as a Safety Standard

Hemlock is natural. Nature has a wonderfully relaxed attitude towards product liability.

How Can Equine Anxiety Be Managed More Effectively?

Identify the Trigger

Determine whether the horse is reacting to:

  • Separation

  • Confinement

  • Noise

  • Loading

  • Vehicle movement

  • Pain

  • Unfamiliar people

  • Competition atmosphere

  • Previous punishment

  • Poor footing

  • A particular procedure

  • Other horses

Different triggers require different plans.

Use Graduated Exposure

Begin at an intensity the horse can notice without losing the ability to respond.

For trailer loading, this may mean:
