Yoga & Stretching for Senior Dogs in 2025: Vet‑Approved Moves for Mobility & Comfort 🐾🧘♂️

By Dr. Duncan Houston BVSc

🧘 Why Yoga for Dogs?

As dogs age, their joints stiffen, muscles tighten, and balance declines. Canine yoga—or “doga”—blends gentle stretching with mindful movement to improve mobility, reduce discomfort, and support relaxation. These five moves are adapted for senior dogs with limited flexibility and medical needs.

1. 🚴 Bicycle (Hind‑Leg Flow)

With your dog lying comfortably, gently rotate one hind leg in a slow circular “bicycle” motion. Do 5–8 rotations per leg. This warms joint fluid, eases stiffness, and improves rear-leg range of motion.

2. 🐾 Shoulder Extension Pose

With your dog standing or resting, support their elbow and gently guide the front leg forward. Hold for 20–30 seconds per leg. This pose stretches the chest and shoulder muscles and prevents front-end stiffness.

3. 🪑 Sit‑to‑Stand Flow

Encourage your dog to move from a sit to a stand position. Repeat 5–8 times slowly. This active movement strengthens hips and knees while reinforcing muscle memory and balance.

4. 🌪️ Spinal Twist (C‑Curve)

With your dog standing, use a treat to guide their nose toward their flank to create a gentle twist. Hold 15–30 seconds per side. This releases back tension and improves spinal flexibility.

5. 🧘♀️ Downward Dog Stretch

Guide your dog into a play-bow position with extended front legs and lowered chest. Hold briefly. This natural canine yoga pose stretches the groin, shoulders, and spine, and promotes circulation.

⚠️ Yoga Safety Tips

  • Warm up with a short walk or gentle massage.
  • Stop if your dog shows discomfort or resistance.
  • Hold stretches 10–30 seconds; repeat 2–3 times per side.
  • Consult your vet before starting any routine, especially with arthritis or past injuries.

🔚 Final Thoughts

Incorporating yoga and stretching into your senior dog’s routine doesn’t just benefit their joints—it nourishes their overall comfort and spirit. These mindful, low-impact movements help older dogs stay active, flexible, and connected with you through each flow 🧘🐾.
