🐾 6 Fun Exercises to Do With Your Dog in 2025

By Dr. Duncan Houston BVSc

Exercising with your dog is a fantastic way to stay healthy and strengthen your bond. Here are six fun and effective exercises you can enjoy together:

1. Warm-Up Walks

Start with a brisk walk to get both of you moving. Keep your dog on a short leash and walk back and forth for 1–2 minutes. Then, transition into a light jog or sprint for another 2 minutes. Finish with some arm circles while your dog stands beside you. 🐕🦺🏃♀️

2. Waggin' Wall Sits

Stand with your back against a wall and feet shoulder-width apart. Slide down into a sitting position, keeping your knees at a 90-degree angle. Hold for up to 1 minute. Your dog can sit in front of you or place their paws on your knees for added resistance. 🧱🦵

3. Leapin' Labrador Side Hops

With your dog on your left side, perform side-to-side hops. Encourage your dog to follow your movements, hopping three times to the right and then to the left. This exercise improves agility and coordination for both of you. 🐕↔️

4. Rover's Reverse Lunges

Face your dog and ask them to sit. Step backward into a lunge, keeping your front knee over your ankle. Return to standing and repeat on the other side. Between lunges, have your dog perform commands like 'sit' or 'shake' to keep them engaged. 🔁🦴

5. Butts with Your Mutts

Lie on your back with knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Lift your hips into a bridge position, engaging your core and glutes. Your dog can lie beside you or place their front paws on your abdomen for added fun. 🧘♂️🐶

6. Sheltie Step-Ups

Using a step platform, step up with one foot, bringing your dog along to place their front paws on the platform. Step down and repeat with the other foot. This exercise enhances balance and lower body strength. 🧘

Tips for a Successful Workout

  • Always start with a warm-up and end with a cool-down.
  • Keep sessions short and fun to maintain your dog's interest.
  • Use positive reinforcement to encourage participation.
  • Ensure exercises are appropriate for your dog's age and fitness level.

Remember, the goal is to have fun and stay active together. Always consult your veterinarian before starting a new exercise routine with your dog.
