New Puppy’s First 24 Hours Vet Survival Guide for 2025 🐶✨
By Dr. Duncan Houston BVSc
Bringing home your new puppy is exciting—but it can also be overwhelming. Where do they sleep? What if they don’t eat? How do you survive the first night?
I’m Dr. Duncan Houston. Whether you’re a first-time puppy parent or just need a refresher, this is your hourbyhour survival guide to the first day (and night) with your new furry best friend.
🕘 HourbyHour: What to Expect
Hour 1: Arrival
- 🏡 Bring your pup straight inside—no crowds or overstimulation
- 🛏️ Introduce the crate/bed area quietly
- 💧 Offer water and a small amount of familiar food
Hour 2–4: Exploration Time
- 🚶 Supervised, onleash indoor sniffing
- 🧸 Show them a few toys, don’t overwhelm
- 🚽 Begin potty training immediately—take them out every 30–60 min
Hour 5–6: First Nap
- 🧘 Encourage rest in a quiet area
- 💤 Use the crate if you're crate training
- 🎧 White noise or gentle music helps block out unfamiliar sounds
Hour 7–10: Gentle Play + Meals
- 🦴 Feed a small dinner (familiar food if possible)
- 🎓 Keep training light—“sit,” name recognition, and calm handling
- 🧼 Expect another nap soon after eating or playing
Hour 11–12: Wind Down
- 🛏️ Final toilet break + short crate rest
- 🌙 Set up for the first night: crate nearby, comfort item, white noise
🌙 Night One Survival Tips
- 🗣️ Expect whining—comfort calmly without removing them unless for a toilet break
- 🕑 Set 1–2 alarmed toilet trips depending on age (around 2am, 5am)
- 💤 Keep everything quiet—no play, lights, or excitement
📦 What to Prepare Before Pickup
- 🛏️ Crate + soft blanket or towel
- 🍲 Puppy food + 2 bowls (food & water)
- 🧸 2–3 safe chew toys or teethers
- 🚽 Cleaning supplies (enzyme spray + paper towels)
📋 FirstDay Do’s & Don’ts
✅ DO:
- Stick to one room or area at first
- Give them time to adjust—expect naps, not play marathons
- Start toilet training and crate exposure on Day 1
❌ DON’T:
- Invite the whole neighborhood over
- Give too many toys or switch diets suddenly
- Let them sleep on your bed if you don’t want that longterm
🧠 Signs Your Puppy Is Overwhelmed
- 😟 Cowering, hiding, or trembling
- 😴 Sleeping excessively or zoning out
- 🚫 Avoiding food, water, or eye contact
Back off stimulation. Let them adjust at their pace.
