Vaping may be a modern trend, but for pets it’s a growing source of poisonings. While marketed as a safer alternative for humans, e-cigarettes (vapes) and refillable e-juice bottles pose a serious and potentially fatal threat to dogs and cats 🐾💔.
💨 What Are E-Cigarettes & E-Juice?
E-cigs (a.k.a. vapes or personal vaporizers) heat a flavored liquid—usually containing nicotine—into an inhalable mist. The e-liquid is made up of:
- 🧪 Propylene glycol
- 🌿 Vegetable glycerin
- 🍓 Flavor compounds
- 🚬 Nicotine (up to 36 mg/mL!)
The e-liquid can come in colorful cartridges or refillable bottles—both extremely attractive and toxic to pets if ingested or spilled. 😿🐕
☠️ Why Is Nicotine So Dangerous for Pets?
Nicotine is rapidly absorbed through the mouth, skin, and stomach—and even small amounts can be lethal:
- 🐶 0.5 mg/lb can cause poisoning in dogs
- 🐱 20 mg can be deadly for cats and small dogs
A single 30-mL refill bottle with 36 mg/mL contains over 1,000 mg of nicotine—enough to kill a large dog. 😨
🚨 Symptoms of Nicotine Poisoning in Pets
Signs typically begin within 15–30 minutes of ingestion or skin contact. Watch for:
Early Signs:
- 💦 Excessive drooling
- 🤮 Vomiting or diarrhea
- 😨 Restlessness or agitation
- 🐾 Panting or rapid breathing
Severe Symptoms:
- ⚡ Tremors, twitching
- 🌀 Confusion, seizures
- ❤️ Rapid heart rate, high blood pressure
- 😴 Weakness, paralysis
- 💔 Collapse, cardiac arrest, coma, or death
🏥 What To Do If Your Pet Is Exposed
If your pet may have ingested vape juice or chewed a cartridge:
- 📞 Call your vet or an emergency clinic IMMEDIATELY
- 📞 Contact a poison hotline like ASPCA Animal Poison Control (888-426-4435)
- 🧼 Rinse skin or paws thoroughly if exposed topically
DO NOT try to make your pet vomit—nicotine absorbs too quickly and vomiting may not help.
🧪 Treatment & Prognosis
Treatment may involve:
- 💉 IV fluids for hydration & toxin flushing
- 🧠 Seizure & heart rhythm control
- 💊 Hospitalization and supportive care
Prognosis depends on how fast treatment begins—early care can save lives, but high-dose poisonings can be fatal even with emergency care. ⏱️
