Pain Medications for Dogs in 2025 🐾 | Safe NSAID Use & Owner Tips from Dr Duncan Houston

Pain Medications for Dogs in 2025 🐾

Pain relief is essential for quality of life in dogs—whether it's due to arthritis, surgery, or chronic illness. Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) are commonly prescribed for canine pain, but they need to be used carefully. I’m Dr Duncan Houston BVSc, and this guide explains how to safely use NSAIDs in dogs, what to watch for, and what questions to ask your vet 💊🐶

🧪 What Are NSAIDs?

NSAIDs help reduce inflammation, swelling, stiffness, and joint pain. They work by targeting prostaglandins—chemicals involved in the pain and inflammation process. Some NSAIDs are also used after surgery to relieve discomfort and promote healing.

✅ FDA-Approved NSAIDs for Dogs (2025)

  • 💊 Rimadyl® (carprofen)
  • 💊 Vetprofen®, Carprieve®, Novox®, Quellin® (carprofen generics)
  • 💊 Metacam®, Meloxidyl®, Loxicom®, Orocam® (meloxicam)
  • 💊 Previcox® (firocoxib)
  • 💊 Deramaxx® (deracoxib)
  • 💊 Onsior® (robenacoxib—for 3-day use)
  • 💊 Galliprant® (grapiprant—for arthritis)

📋 What to Discuss with Your Vet Before Starting an NSAID

  • 📌 Why is the NSAID being prescribed?
  • 📌 What dose and how long should my dog take it?
  • 📌 What are the side effects to watch for?
  • 📌 What other meds or supplements should be avoided?
  • 📌 Are blood tests needed before or during use?
  • 📌 How often should my dog be rechecked?

⚠️ Warning Signs of NSAID Side Effects

Most side effects affect the kidneys, liver, or gastrointestinal system. Contact your vet immediately if your dog shows any of the following:

  • 😴 Behavior changes or lethargy
  • 🍽️ Eating less or refusing food
  • 🤮 Vomiting or black/tarry stool
  • 💩 Diarrhea
  • 🌡️ Yellowing of gums, skin, or eyes
  • 🩸 Bleeding, scabs, or redness of the skin
  • 💧 Increased thirst or urination

🚫 Do NOT Mix NSAIDs With:

  • 🚫 Aspirin—not safe or effective long-term for dogs
  • 🚫 Corticosteroids (e.g., prednisone)
  • ⚠️ Multiple NSAIDs—only use one at a time unless advised otherwise

🧪 Pre-Treatment Testing

Your vet may recommend bloodwork to assess liver and kidney function before starting NSAIDs—especially for older dogs or those with chronic illnesses.

🗓️ Ongoing Monitoring

If your dog will be on long-term NSAID therapy, regular checkups and lab work are important:

  • 📅 Every 6–12 months (or more often if issues arise)
  • 🧬 Helps catch early signs of organ stress before they become serious

💬 Ask Your Vet About:

  • 🦴 Joint supplements that may reduce NSAID need
  • 🐾 Weight loss for arthritis relief
  • 🛏️ Mobility aids and home environment support
  • 💉 Other pain therapies like Librela®, Adequan®, or laser therapy

📲 What to Do if You Suspect a Reaction

Use the acronym FRIEND to remember warning signs:

  • F – Food refusal
  • R – Red skin or scabs
  • I – Increased drinking
  • E – Eating less
  • N – New behavior changes
  • D – Diarrhea, vomiting, or black stool

🚨 STOP the drug and contact your veterinarian immediately!

✅ Summary

  • ✔️ NSAIDs help dogs manage pain from arthritis or surgery
  • ✔️ Many options exist—your vet will guide the best one
  • ⚠️ Watch for signs of stomach, kidney, or liver problems
  • 🚫 Do not mix NSAIDs with aspirin or steroids
  • 📋 Get routine blood tests to stay safe

When used responsibly, NSAIDs can bring your dog lasting comfort and mobility 🐕‍🦺💛
