🦠 What is Ringworm (Dermatophytosis)?
Ringworm, despite its name, is not caused by a worm but by a group of fungi known as dermatophytes 🧬. It’s a contagious skin infection affecting the fur, nails, and outer skin of dogs and cats 🐶🐱. The most common culprit is Microsporum canis. Pets may show circular bald patches, crusty lesions, or minimal symptoms—yet still be highly infectious to other animals and people.
⚠️ Why Environmental Cleaning Matters
Ringworm spores can survive in the environment for up to 18 months. 🧫 Contaminated pet hair, bedding, furniture, and floors serve as major reservoirs. This is why thorough environmental decontamination is critical to prevent reinfection and protect other pets and household members 🧍♀️🧍♂️.
🧽 The Two-Step Decontamination Process
Dr Duncan Houston recommends a two-step approach for cleaning and disinfecting:
Step 1: Remove Pet Hair
- 🧹 Vacuum, sweep, or lint-roll all surfaces
- 🧼 Wash with soap and water to remove debris
- 💧 Dry completely before proceeding to Step 2
This step is more important than disinfection! Spores cling to hair and skin flakes more than surfaces themselves.
Step 2: Disinfect
- 💦 Apply disinfectant and let sit for at least 5 minutes
- 🧽 Rinse surfaces that may be damaged by chemicals
- 📅 Repeat regularly during treatment period

Important: Always clean before disinfecting. Most products do not work well on dirty surfaces. Never mix bleach with other products 🚫.

- Choose a room with no carpet or clutter
- Use washable pet beds and towels
- Keep food and water bowls in easy-to-clean dishes
- Limit foot traffic and sanitize hands after each interaction
📅 How Long Do You Have to Clean?
Cleaning and disinfection must continue until your pet is confirmed cured by your veterinarian. This may take several weeks to months depending on severity and treatment response. Continue daily hair removal and 2–3x/week disinfection throughout this period.
