Dog Vaccines 2025: Vet Approved Schedules Explained 🐶✨

By Dr. Duncan Houston BVSc

Vaccinations are one of the most important tools we have to keep dogs healthy, prevent suffering, and stop the spread of deadly diseases. But not all vaccines are the same—and not every dog needs every vaccine.

I’m Dr. Duncan Houston, veterinarian and founder of Ask A Vet. This guide explains which vaccines are essential (core), which are optional (non-core), when they’re given, and how to make the safest, smartest decisions for your dog.

💉 Core Dog Vaccines (Essential for Every Dog)

  • Parvovirus – Causes severe vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration
  • Distemper – Affects the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and neurological systems
  • Adenovirus (Hepatitis) – Can cause liver failure and eye inflammation
  • Rabies – Fatal and legally required in most countries

🗓️ Puppy Core Vaccine Schedule (Typical)

  • 6–8 weeks: 1st DHPP (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza)
  • 10–12 weeks: 2nd DHPP
  • 14–16 weeks: 3rd DHPP + Rabies (if legally required)
  • 1 year later: Booster DHPP + Rabies
  • Every 1–3 years after: As advised by your vet

💉 Non-Core Vaccines (Given Based on Risk)

  • Bordetella (Kennel Cough) – Required by boarding facilities or doggy daycare
  • Leptospirosis – Spread through wildlife and standing water
  • Lyme Disease – For dogs in tick-heavy areas
  • Canine Influenza – May be required for social dogs in outbreaks

🐕 Adult Dog Vaccine Schedule

  • Core boosters every 1–3 years, depending on local law and brand used
  • Non-core boosters yearly if still at risk

🤔 Should I Titer Test?

Titer tests check for existing immunity without revaccinating. Useful for:

  • Senior or immunocompromised dogs
  • Owners worried about over-vaccination

Discuss this with your vet—it’s not right for all situations.

🚫 What If I Miss a Booster?

  • If overdue, your dog may need to restart the series
  • Your vet will guide you on safe re-vaccination timing
