Cold weather does not directly cause every case of colic. The real winter danger is what changes around the horse: frozen water, reduced drinking, dry hay replacing moisture-rich pasture, less turnout, altered routines and sudden feed changes.

Should You Wet Feed or Soak Hay?
Adding water to a horse’s usual feed can deliver additional fluid and may be useful for older horses, poor drinkers or horses requiring soaked pellets, hay cubes or beet pulp.
However, wet feed should not be treated as proof that the horse is adequately hydrated. The horse must still have unrestricted access to drinking water, and actual bucket or trough intake should still be monitored.
