🐾 5 Steps to Successfully Housetrain Your Puppy or Adult Dog – Vet Guide 2025 🚽

By Dr Duncan Houston, BVSc

Whether you’ve just brought home a new puppy or adopted an adult dog, housetraining is one of the first and most crucial lessons to teach. A consistent, kind, and structured approach can make the process faster and more successful—for both you and your dog. Let’s break it down into 5 simple but essential steps. 🐶✅

1. 🧐 Always Supervise

Dogs—especially puppies—must be supervised constantly while learning where it’s appropriate to go potty. Accidents often happen simply because no one is watching.

  • Use crates, baby gates, tethers, or exercise pens (X-pens) to keep your dog in sight at all times.
  • If you’re too busy to supervise, place your dog in a secure and clean confinement area like a crate or penned zone with enrichment toys.
  • Observe for signs like circling, sniffing, or squatting—these indicate they need to go out, now!

2. 🧼 Clean, Clean, Clean

If your pup has already had an accident, your job is not just to mop it up—you must deep clean with an enzymatic cleaner made specifically for pet urine and feces. 🧽

  • Use an enzymatic cleaner that breaks down biological waste, not just mask the odor.
  • Inject cleaner into the carpet pad if the accident was large—this removes lingering scents that can attract your dog back to the same spot.
  • Use a blacklight to spot hidden urine areas on carpets, curtains, and furniture.

Remember, dogs can smell what we can't. Even if a surface smells fine to us, it might scream "bathroom!" to your pup. 👃❌

3. ⏰ Follow a Strict Schedule

Dogs thrive on routine. Especially for young puppies (under four months), a tight schedule is vital. 🐕📆

  • Take your puppy out:
    • Every hour ⏳
    • Every 15 minutes during play 🤪
    • Immediately after eating (within 20 minutes) 🍽️
    • After waking from naps 💤
    • Before and after crate time 🔐
  • Meal planning: Feed 3x daily if under 4 months, and 2x daily if older. Predictable meals = predictable bowel movements. 💩
  • Can't be home? Arrange for a dog walker or trusted friend to take your dog out every few hours.

Pro tip: Keep a potty log for the first few weeks to track patterns and identify when accidents are most likely to happen. 📓🖊️

4. 🎉 Reward the Right Behavior

Positive reinforcement is your strongest tool. Reward every outdoor bathroom success immediately with treats and praise. 🦴

  • Use high-value treats your dog loves (tiny and soft works best!).
  • Say a potty cue like “Go potty!” as they begin to eliminate. With repetition, they’ll learn to go on cue. 🔊
  • Only reward after they finish the business—not before, and not when you’re back inside.
  • Take your dog out on a leash to prevent them from running off or becoming distracted. Stay quiet and give them privacy to go. 🐕🚶‍♂️

This teaches them exactly what you want and builds their confidence in doing it right. 🙌

5. 🚫 Avoid Punishment

Many pet parents get frustrated during the housetraining process. But yelling, scolding, or rubbing your dog’s nose in an accident is never effective—and it can make things worse. 😞❌

  • Dogs will learn to hide their accidents or avoid peeing in front of you—especially inside the house.
  • Fear or anxiety can increase accidents and create mistrust. 😟
  • If you catch them in the act, use a gentle “Oops!” or distract them with a clap and then immediately take them outside to finish.

Then clean the mess and move on. 💪🚿

🧠 Pro Tips for Long-Term Success

  • Stick with your training plan for at least 3–4 weeks before judging success.
  • Track wins! Celebrate your pup staying accident-free for a whole day… then two… then a week! 🥳
  • Prevent setbacks: If you travel, move, or change schedules, go back to basics briefly.
  • Adult dogs may take longer than puppies due to past habits or anxiety. Be patient and consistent. ❤️
