Borzoi 2025 Guide: Expert Care, Training & Health 🐾
By Dr. Duncan Houston BVSc
1. 🏛️ History & Origins
The Borzoi, historically known as the Russian Wolfhound, was bred in 17th-century Russia by crossing Arabian greyhounds with thick-coated local breeds to create a fast, agile hunter used by aristocracy for wolf pursuit.
2. 📏 Appearance & Physical Standard
- Height: Males 28–34″; females 26–32″
- Weight: Males 75–105 lb; females 60–85 lb
- Coat: Silky, flat, wavy or curly, with undercoat in cold climates
- Expression: Graceful and aristocratic, with quiet demeanor and striking presence
3. 🧠 Temperament & Personality
- Gentle, quiet, affectionate with family—reserved with strangers
- Independent and dignified—responds poorly to harsh training; thrives on patience and consistency
- Laid-back indoors (“couch potatoes”) but enjoy their sprinting bursts outdoors
4. 🏞️ Exercise & Environment
Borzoi need at least 1 hour of exercise daily, including leash walks or safe, fenced runs—off-track hunting drive requires secure containment.
5. 🎓 Training & Socialization
- Best introduced early to family, pets, and environments to curb prey instincts.
- Training must use gentle, positive methods; avoid repetition and harsh commands.
6. 💉 Health & Lifespan
- Life Expectancy: ~10–13 (some up to 14+) years
- Common Concerns: Gastric dilatation-volvulus (bloat), joint disorders, progressive retinal atrophy, cardiac murmurs, medication sensitivity, skin irritations
- Require breed-specific screenings: heart exams, eye checks, hip panels, anesthesia precautions.
7. 🛁 Grooming & Coat Care
- Brush 2–3× weekly to prevent mats and reduce shedding; more during seasonal coats
- Bath monthly or as needed; trim nails, clean ears and teeth regularly.
8. ✅ Ideal Owner Profile
- Best for experienced owners in homes with secure, fenced yards
- Not ideal for apartment living or households with small, free-roaming pets
- They bond closely and appreciate calm, watchful companionship from devoted families
9. 🐕 In Summary
The regal Borzoi is a poised, gentle sighthound combining grace, athleticism, and refined calm. Ideal for dedicated owners who appreciate its beauty, independence, and unique care needs.
