Dog Body Language 101: Vet’s Guide to Reading Their Mood 🐶✨
By Dr. Duncan Houston BVSc
Wagging tail = happy dog… right? Not always. In fact, many signals we think are friendly can actually be signs of stress, fear, or overstimulation.
I’m Dr. Duncan Houston. In this guide, I’ll teach you how to interpret your dog’s body language accurately—so you can build trust, prevent conflict, and respond to what they’re really saying.
🧠 Why Body Language Matters
Dogs communicate primarily through body language—not words. They rely on posture, tail position, eye contact, and movement to express their emotions. Reading these signals correctly can help you:
- ✅ Avoid unwanted escalation (like growling or biting)
- ✅ Recognize fear or pain early
- ✅ Know when your dog is relaxed, over it, or just needs space
📋 The 5 Key Areas to Watch
1. 👁️ Eyes
- Soft eyes, blinking = calm, relaxed
- Staring or whale eye (white showing) = stress or uncertainty
- Avoiding eye contact = submission or anxiety
2. 👂 Ears
- Neutral or forward = alert but calm
- Pinned back = nervousness, fear, or appeasement
- One forward, one back = confusion or conflicted emotion
3. 🐕 Tail
- Neutral wag (side to side) = friendly
- High, fast wag = excitement, overstimulation
- Low, slow wag = uncertainty
- Tucked tail = fear or discomfort
4. 🐾 Body Posture
- Loose, curved spine, wiggly = relaxed
- Stiff, straight legs, tense stance = alert or defensive
- Lowered body, head down = submissive or unsure
5. 🗣️ Mouth
- Open mouth, tongue out = relaxed or cooling down
- Lip licking (no food involved) = stress
- Tight lips, clenched jaw = tension
- Yawning repeatedly = anxiety or appeasement
🚩 Red Flags: Signs of a Stressed Dog
- 😬 Whale eye
- 📉 Freezing or sudden stillness
- 🐾 Backing away or cowering
- 🩶 Excessive panting when not hot
- 😠 Growling or baring teeth
Important: These are warning signs, not misbehavior. Respect the signal before it escalates.
