Lead poisoning is a serious, life-threatening emergency in dogs and cats. While it’s more common in dogs—especially puppies—all pets are at risk from environmental exposure to lead-containing materials. 🧪🐾
📦 Where Pets Encounter Lead
Though lead-based paint was banned in the U.S. in 1978, remnants still pose a threat in older buildings, contaminated soil, or during renovations. Additional lead sources include:
- 🎨 Paint flakes or dust from home remodeling
- 🎣 Fishing sinkers and tackle
- 🪫 Car batteries and engine parts
- 💧 Plumbing solder or fixtures
- 🧻 Curtain weights or lead foil
- 🐾 Glazed ceramic food or water bowls (especially handmade or imported)
- 🧸 Toys, putty, golf balls, inks, and tar paper
⚠️ Signs of Lead Poisoning
🐶 Dogs:
- 😴 Lethargy or sudden aggression
- 🌪️ Seizures, hysteria, snapping
- 🧼 Vomiting, diarrhea, drooling
- 🐕 Hiding in dark areas, appetite loss
🐱 Cats:
- 🤮 Vomiting
- 🥣 Appetite loss
- ⚡ Seizures
💡 Toxicity can result from as little as 5–15 mg/kg depending on the dose and duration of exposure.
🔬 How Vets Diagnose Lead Poisoning
- 🧪 Blood tests (CBC, chemistry panel)
- 🧫 Urinalysis
- 📸 X-rays (may show metal fragments in the GI tract)
💊 Treatment for Lead Toxicity
- 🔪 Removal of ingested lead via endoscopy or surgery
- 🧼 Decontamination (lavage, enemas, activated charcoal)
- 💉 Chelation therapy (removes lead from the body)
📈 Prognosis depends on how soon treatment begins. Most pets recover fully if treated promptly, but untreated cases may suffer neurological damage or kidney failure.
