🌿 Vet Guide 2025: Itching and Allergies in Dogs – Causes, Relief & Long-Term Care 🐶

By Dr Duncan Houston, BVSc

Itchy dogs can be a source of frustration for both pets and their people. Chronic scratching, licking, chewing, and rubbing can lead to open wounds, infections, and sleepless nights. Understanding the causes of canine itch—and how to manage it—can improve your dog’s comfort and quality of life. In this 2025 guide, we’ll explore the most common sources of itching, how they’re diagnosed, and what to do for lasting relief. 🐾

🔍 What Causes Chronic Itching in Dogs?

Itching can be caused by several issues, but the two main culprits are:

  • 🦟 External parasites like fleas and mites
  • 🌾 Allergies—environmental, food-related, or contact-based

Itching includes more than scratching. You may also see:

  • 🐕 Chewing paws or limbs
  • 👅 Excessive licking
  • 😬 Rubbing against furniture or the floor

🦟 Flea Allergy – The Most Common Cause

Flea Allergy Dermatitis (FAD) is the leading cause of itching in dogs. A single bite from a flea can cause an allergic reaction that lasts for days.

Common Myths:

  • “I never see fleas on my dog.”
Flea-allergic dogs groom excessively and may remove fleas before you see them.
  • “It’s winter—fleas aren’t around.”
Fleas survive indoors year-round and are active in many climates even in colder months.

✅ Year-round flea prevention is essential for all itchy pets—especially those with known allergies. 🛡️

🍗 Food Allergy

Food allergies often present as:

  • 🍽️ Chronic itching without seasonal pattern
  • 🐾 Red paws, itchy face, or persistent ear infections

Diagnosis Requires a Food Trial:

  • 🥩 Feed a prescription or home-cooked hypoallergenic diet with novel or hydrolyzed proteins
  • 📅 Trial duration: 8–12 weeks
  • 🔁 Reintroduce previous diet to confirm diagnosis (food challenge)

⚠️ There are no accurate blood or skin tests for food allergies—only diet trials work. ✅

🌼 Atopic Dermatitis (Environmental Allergies)

This is an inherited condition where the skin overreacts to harmless substances like:

  • 🌾 Pollens (grass, weeds, trees)
  • 🏠 Dust mites
  • 🦠 Mold spores

Signs often begin between 6 months and 3 years of age and may include:

  • 🧴 Itchy skin
  • 👂 Chronic ear infections
  • 🔁 Recurrent hot spots or infections

Diagnosis:

  • 🧪 Allergy blood or skin testing
  • 💉 Allergen-specific immunotherapy (ASIT)—aka allergy shots or drops

This is the only treatment that may reduce allergy severity over time. 🎯

🦠 Secondary Infections

Many allergic dogs suffer from bacterial or yeast infections that worsen itchiness. These infections:

  • 📍 Create red, scabby, or crusty lesions
  • 👃 Often cause odor
  • 📸 May require cytology, culture, or biopsy to diagnose

Long-term management may require:

  • 💊 Oral or topical antibiotics
  • 🧴 Antifungal medications
  • 🛁 Medicated baths

💊 Can Itching Be Managed Without Testing?

Yes—some owners start with symptomatic treatments before committing to testing. These include:

  • 🧴 Topical sprays or shampoos
  • 💊 Anti-itch medications like Apoquel®, Cytopoint®, or antihistamines
  • 🐟 Omega-3 supplements to support skin health

But without addressing the underlying allergy, symptoms will often return when medications stop. 🎯
