Transporting a horse is not simply a matter of putting them in a float and driving from one location to another.
Every acceleration, corner, lane change and braking movement forces the horse to rebalance their body on a moving floor. Even a horse that appears quiet can arrive dehydrated, fatigued, stiff, stressed or with temporarily reduced intestinal movement.
The safest journey begins well before the vehicle moves. The horse must be fit to travel, the float must be structurally safe, loading should already be trained and the route must allow adequate monitoring, water and recovery time.

To transport a horse safely, use a clean, well-ventilated and mechanically sound float or truck with a non-slip floor, secure partitions and sufficient space. Why Is Transport Physically Stressful for Horses?
A horse cannot relax completely while standing in a moving vehicle. The muscles of the limbs, trunk and neck continually adjust to maintain balance.

The first safety decision is whether the horse should be loaded at all.

The advice that an injured limb should simply “face rearward” is incomplete.
In a straight-load trailer:

There is no need to create an hourly ritual of untying a horse inside a standard float.

Usually, horses in conventional individual bays are tied with a quick-release attachment and enough rope for safe head and neck movement. Horses may travel loose only in a suitably designed compartment. Tying too short and travelling loose in the wrong setup can both be dangerous.
