A yellow, brown or crusted patch on a bearded dragon’s skin deserves attention, but it does not automatically mean Yellow Fungus Disease.
Normal shedding, thermal burns, bacterial infections, trauma and retained material within femoral pores can all create similar-looking changes. However, true Yellow Fungus Disease can invade deeply through the skin, enter muscle and internal organs, spread to other reptiles and become fatal.
The safest approach is to investigate suspicious lesions early, before a small patch becomes a deep, painful and much harder infection to control.

What Is Yellow Fungus Disease?
Yellow Fungus Disease is the common hobby name for a fungal skin disease more accurately called nannizziomycosis.
In central bearded dragons, the organism most strongly associated with the classic disease is Nannizziopsis guarroi. Experimental infection has confirmed that this fungus can act as a primary pathogen and produce the characteristic progressive skin disease rather than merely invading skin that was already damaged by another condition. Do Bacteria Occur With the Fungus?
They can.
Bearded dragons may have concurrent bacterial dermatitis involving organisms such as Devriesea agamarum, Enterococcus, Clostridium or other bacteria. Itraconazole has produced variable results.

Laboratory isolates of N. guarroi have shown low inhibitory concentrations to terbinafine, and pharmacokinetic research found that oral administration could achieve plasma concentrations exceeding those values for prolonged periods.
