How this tool works

How the pet match quiz works

The quiz asks eighteen questions in a fixed order: your home and the outdoor access a pet would really have, how much attention you could give and how long a pet would be alone, the energy and lifestyle you want, your monthly budget and how an unexpected vet bill would feel, who else lives with you and which animals you already have, allergies, how much mess, noise and grooming you can live with, how confident you are with training, the kind of bond you want, and the part of pet ownership you would find hardest.

Your answers are scored against ten possible matches: Adult Cat; Kitten; Small Adult Dog; Family Dog; Active Dog; Puppy; Rabbit or Guinea Pig; Bird, Reptile, or Fish; Foster First; and Not Yet.

The result names the type that fits best with a match strength, four reasons it may suit you, four things to prepare for, a type to maybe avoid for now, and the other types that could also work.

How long does the quiz take?

There are eighteen questions and they appear one at a time. Nothing is typed — every question is a list of answers to choose from — and the Back button inside the quiz returns to the previous question with your answer still selected.

Is the result a recommendation of a specific animal?

No. It names a broad type of pet and explains why your answers point that way, so it is a starting point for a conversation with a vet, a shelter or a breeder rather than a decision.

Can I change my answers or start over?

Yes. Use Back inside the quiz to revisit a question, Change answers on the result screen to return to the quiz, or Start again to clear every answer and begin from the first question.
