Veterinary Vaccination Protocol Builder

Walk into any clinic, tick the bottles on the shelf, enter the patient and what it has already had, and get a dated protocol for the vet and a plain-language handout for the owner. Dogs, cats, rabbits, ferrets and horses across 11 manufacturers and 101 products.

Build the plan

1Species, region and rules

The species filters the shelf; the region filters which brands you see; the mode decides how conservative the intervals are.

Species
Guideline mode

2Bottles on the shelf

Tick what this clinic stocks. The plan uses each bottle's own route and label schedule, and tells you which bottle to draw up at each visit.

3Patient

Date of birth drives every age rule. Use the age helper if the owner only knows an approximate age.

4What has already been given

Add every previous dose you can verify from the record or the owner's card. Leave empty for a first-time patient.

5Vaccines in this plan

Auto-selected from the shelf, the history and the patient factors. Untick anything you are not giving.

Vaccination protocol

VeterinarianDate

Professional use. Schedules are label-typical defaults compiled by Dr Duncan Houston from manufacturer labels, WSAVA 2024, AAEP and AVA guidance. Labels differ between countries and change over time: the label in your hand and local law override anything here. Verify minimum ages, intervals and rabies legal requirements before administering.

Quick answer

Puppies and kittens need a core dose every 2 to 4 weeks until 16 weeks or older, a booster at 6 to 12 months, then core vaccines every 3 years and inactivated vaccines (leptospirosis, kennel cough, FeLV, rabies where annual) every year. Rabbits need RHDV cover from 4 to 10 weeks depending on the product, yearly or 6-monthly. Horses need tetanus from 3 months. This builder applies the label of the bottle you actually hold, tracks history, and shows the working.

How to use the Vaccination Protocol Builder

  1. Pick the species and your region. The region only filters the shelf; untick "only my region" to see every listed product.
  2. Tick the bottles the clinic stocks. Combination products (C4, C5, F4, RCP FeLV, 2in1) cover several vaccine groups at once and the builder tracks each group separately, because a C4 bottle's core component is 3-yearly while its parainfluenza component is annual.
  3. Enter the date of birth or an approximate age, and tick the patient factors that change the plan (boarding, rural water, outdoor cat, pregnancy, previous reaction).
  4. Add every verified previous dose with its product and date. Doses given with a different brand still count towards the same antigen group.
  5. Read the status table (up to date, overdue, in course, restart), then the visit schedule. Copy the vet record into the clinical notes and print or email the owner handout.

The rules the builder applies

Each vaccine group carries a schedule: earliest age, juvenile interval and finish age, adult course, first booster, routine interval, the longest gap tolerated inside a primary course, and whether a lapsed animal needs the course repeated. The bottle you tick can override any of these with its own label (an intranasal kennel cough product is single-dose from 3 weeks; an injectable one is two doses from 6 weeks). WSAVA 2024 mode applies the guideline positions for dogs and cats: one modified-live core dose immunises an adult, first booster at 6 months, core every 3 years, FeLV every 2 years after the first booster. Label-conservative mode keeps two-dose adult courses, a 12-month first booster and the interval printed on the bottle.

Catch-up logic follows vaccine biology. Modified-live and vectored vaccines prime lasting memory, so an adult with any prior dose is completed by a single dose. Inactivated vaccines (leptospirosis, kennel cough injectable, canine influenza, Lyme, FeLV, chlamydia, FIV) restart their course if the gap between primary doses is too long or the animal is more than 18 months past its last dose. Rabies is treated as single-dose with the legal interval flagged for you to confirm. ProHeart is scheduled as a parasite preventive at the vaccine visits, not as a vaccine.

C3 core (DHP)Young: every 4 wk to 16 wk. Adult: 2 doses 4 wk apart. From 6 wk. Booster +12 mo. Then every 36 mo.CoreModified-live core vaccines. WSAVA 2024: puppies every 2 to 4 weeks until 16 weeks or older, booster at 6 months (26 weeks) or 12 months, then no more often than every 3 years. A single MLV dose immunises a healthy dog over 16 weeks; labels usually still state two doses.
ParainfluenzaYoung: every 4 wk to 16 wk. Adult: 2 doses 4 wk apart. From 6 wk. Booster +12 mo. Then every 12 mo.Non-coreUsually bundled in C4/C5 or intranasal kennel cough products. Annual revaccination regardless of the 3-year core interval in the same bottle.
LeptospirosisAdult: 2 doses 4 wk apart. From 8 wk. Booster +12 mo. Then every 12 mo. Restart if >18 mo lapsed.Non-coreInactivated bacterin: two doses 2 to 4 weeks apart from 8 weeks (some labels 6 weeks), annual revaccination. Most labels require the two-dose course to be repeated if the interval is well exceeded. Serovar coverage differs by product and region.
Kennel cough (Bb)Adult: 2 doses 4 wk apart. From 6 wk. Booster +12 mo. Then every 12 mo. Restart if >18 mo lapsed.Non-coreRoute decides the schedule: intranasal single dose from 3 weeks (onset about 72 hours), oral single dose from 8 weeks, injectable two doses 2 to 4 weeks apart. All annual. Pick the bottle and the builder applies its route.
Canine influenzaAdult: 2 doses 3 wk apart. From 8 wk. Booster +12 mo. Then every 12 mo. Restart if >18 mo lapsed.Non-coreInactivated. Two doses 2 to 4 weeks apart from 8 weeks (some labels 7 weeks), annual. Not available in every country.
LymeAdult: 2 doses 3 wk apart. From 8 wk. Booster +12 mo. Then every 12 mo. Restart if >18 mo lapsed.Regional / legalTwo doses 2 to 4 weeks apart from 8 to 9 weeks, annual. Regional (North America, parts of Europe). Not relevant in Australia.
RabiesAdult: 1 dose. From 12 wk. Booster +12 mo. Then every 36 mo.Regional / legalSingle dose from 12 weeks, booster at 1 year, then per label (1 or 3 years) and per local law. Australia and New Zealand are rabies-free and do not vaccinate except for export. Check the legal minimum age and interval for your jurisdiction and for any travel certificate.
ProHeartAdult: 1 dose. From 12 wk. Then every 12 mo.Parasite preventionProHeart SR-12 (AU/NZ, some Asian markets): from 12 weeks, annual. ProHeart 6 (US): from 6 months, every 6 months. ProHeart 12 (US): from 12 months, annual. US labels require a negative heartworm antigen test before administration in dogs old enough to test. Given as a separate injection at the same visit as vaccines is common practice; check the label for concurrent-use wording.

Cat vaccination schedules

VaccineDefault scheduleTierClinical notes
F3 core (FVRCP)Young: every 4 wk to 16 wk. Adult: 2 doses 4 wk apart. From 8 wk. Booster +12 mo. Then every 36 mo.CoreMLV or inactivated depending on product. Kittens every 3 to 4 weeks until 16 weeks or older, booster at 6 or 12 months. Panleukopenia protection lasts 3 years or more; herpesvirus and calicivirus protection is shorter, so WSAVA advises annual FHV/FCV revaccination for high-exposure cats (boarding, multi-cat, shows) and 3-yearly for low-risk cats. Some labels are 1-year only.
FeLVAdult: 2 doses 3 wk apart. From 8 wk. Booster +12 mo. Then every 12 mo. Restart if >18 mo lapsed.Non-coreTwo doses 3 to 4 weeks apart from 8 weeks, booster at 1 year. WSAVA 2024: after the first-year booster, revaccinate every 2 to 3 years for cats at continued risk (labels usually say annual). Test FeLV antigen before vaccinating. Kittens are considered core-risk; low-risk indoor adults over 3 years can often stop.
RabiesAdult: 1 dose. From 12 wk. Booster +12 mo. Then every 12 mo.Regional / legalSingle dose from 12 weeks, booster at 1 year, then 1 or 3 years per label and local law. Non-adjuvanted recombinant products are preferred in cats where available. Not used in Australia or New Zealand except for export.
ChlamydiaAdult: 2 doses 4 wk apart. From 8 wk. Booster +12 mo. Then every 12 mo. Restart if >18 mo lapsed.Non-coreTwo doses 3 to 4 weeks apart from 8 to 9 weeks, annual. Non-core: multi-cat and cattery risk only. Often bundled as F4/F5.
BordetellaAdult: 1 dose. From 4 wk. Booster +12 mo. Then every 12 mo.Non-coreIntranasal single dose from 4 weeks, annual. Shelter and cattery use only.
FIVAdult: 3 doses 3 wk apart. From 8 wk. Booster +12 mo. Then every 12 mo. Restart if >18 mo lapsed.Non-coreFel-O-Vax FIV (Australia and New Zealand): three doses 2 to 4 weeks apart from 8 weeks, annual. Test before starting. Vaccine induces antibody-test positivity: microchip and record the vaccination clearly. Not available in most other markets.

Nobivac Myxo-RHD PLUS (myxo + RHDV1 + RHDV2): single dose from 5 weeks, annual. Eravac (RHDV2): from 30 days, annual. Cylap RCD (RHDV1, Australia): label is a single dose from 10 to 12 weeks then annual; the AVA off-label RHDV2 protocol used 4, 8 and 12 week kitten doses (or two adult doses 2 to 4 weeks apart) then 6-monthly boosters. Medgene RHDV2 (US): two doses about 3 weeks apart, annual.
MyxomatosisAdult: 1 dose. From 5 wk. Then every 12 mo.CoreNobivac Myxo-RHD PLUS: single dose from 5 weeks, annual. No myxomatosis vaccine is permitted in Australia (biosecurity policy), so Australian rabbits rely on insect control.

Species notes

Dogs

Core: distemper, adenovirus, parvovirus (C3). Parainfluenza and Bordetella make C4 and C5. Leptospirosis is core in many regions with rural, wildlife or rat exposure and is annual because it is a bacterin. Rabies follows local law. ProHeart SR-12 is given from 12 weeks then yearly in Australia and New Zealand; ProHeart 6 and 12 in the US from 6 and 12 months with a negative antigen test.

Cats

Core: panleukopenia, herpesvirus, calicivirus (F3). FeLV is core-risk for all kittens and for any adult that goes outside; test first. Chlamydia and Bordetella are cattery vaccines. Inject distally and record the site because of injection-site sarcoma; non-adjuvanted products are preferred. FIV vaccine exists in Australia and New Zealand and induces antibody-test positivity.

Rabbits

RHDV (calicivirus) is the essential vaccine everywhere, and RHDV2 now dominates. Filavac VHD K C+V and Nobivac Myxo-RHD PLUS cover both strains; Eravac and Medgene cover RHDV2 only; Cylap RCD covers RHDV1 only. Myxomatosis vaccine is available in the UK and Europe but not permitted in Australia, where insect control is the only defence.

Ferrets

Distemper is almost always fatal: Purevax Ferret Distemper in the US at 8, 11 and 14 weeks then annually, or an adenovirus-free canine distemper vaccine off-label elsewhere. Rabies from 12 weeks annually where required. Ferrets react to vaccines more often than dogs or cats: observe for 30 minutes.

Horses

Tetanus is the one every horse needs: two doses 4 to 6 weeks apart from 3 months, booster at 12 months, then annually per EIDAB/AAEP. Strangles, Hendra (Australia), EHV-1/4, equine influenza (not Australia or New Zealand), West Nile and rabies (North America) are added by risk and geography. Competing horses follow FEI or racing rules for influenza timing.

Vaccination protocol FAQs

How often do dogs need vaccinating?

Puppies need a course every 2 to 4 weeks until 16 weeks or older, then a booster at 6 to 12 months. After that, the core vaccines (distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus) last at least 3 years under WSAVA guidance. Leptospirosis, kennel cough and canine influenza are yearly because they are inactivated or short-lived vaccines.

Why does the puppy course end at 16 weeks?

Maternal antibody from the mother blocks the vaccine in some puppies until about 12 to 16 weeks. The last dose at 16 weeks or older is the one that reliably takes. A course that ends at 12 weeks leaves a proportion of puppies unprotected.

What happens if a vaccine is overdue?

It depends on the type. Modified-live core vaccines prime immune memory, so one dose restores protection in a previously vaccinated adult. Inactivated vaccines such as leptospirosis usually need the two-dose course repeated if the interval has been exceeded by more than a few months. The builder applies each rule and shows the working.

Can I give kennel cough intranasal and injectable together?

You can, but you do not need to: the intranasal and oral products are single-dose and work within days, while the injectable needs two doses. Pick one route and follow its label; do not inject an intranasal product.

Which rabbit vaccine covers RHDV2?

Filavac VHD K C+V and Nobivac Myxo-RHD PLUS cover RHDV1 and RHDV2. Eravac and the Medgene vaccine cover RHDV2 only. Cylap RCD (Australia) is RHDV1 only, which is why Australian vets used a 6-monthly off-label protocol before Filavac became available.

What is the WSAVA 2024 mode?

WSAVA 2024 mode applies the World Small Animal Veterinary Association guidance for dogs and cats: a single modified-live core dose immunises a healthy adult, the first booster moves to 6 months, core revaccination is no more often than every 3 years, and FeLV moves to 2-yearly after the first booster. Label mode keeps the two-dose adult courses and the interval printed on the bottle.

Does ProHeart replace vaccinations?

No. ProHeart is an injectable heartworm preventive (moxidectin), not a vaccine. It is included here because it is scheduled at the same visits: ProHeart SR-12 from 12 weeks then yearly, ProHeart 6 from 6 months then 6-monthly, ProHeart 12 from 12 months then yearly, with a negative heartworm test where the label requires it.

Can I vaccinate a pregnant cat or dog?

Avoid modified-live vaccines in pregnancy. In cats, MLV panleukopenia vaccine given to a pregnant queen can cause cerebellar hypoplasia in the kittens. Defer to after whelping or kittening unless the label states safety in pregnancy.
