Yes, cats and ferrets can become infected with SARS-related coronaviruses, but this topic is easily misunderstood.

The original SARS virus, now commonly called SARS-CoV-1, was studied experimentally in cats and ferrets after the 2003 outbreak. Both species became infected and transmitted the virus to other animals housed with them. That finding did not prove that household pets were transmitting SARS to people.

Cats and ferrets can also become infected with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. In natural household cases, infection has usually travelled from a person to their pet rather than the other way around. What Did the Original SARS Studies Find?

The 2003 Cat and Ferret Study

In one of the first major experiments, researchers deliberately inoculated six cats and six ferrets with SARS-CoV-1.

The findings were striking:

  • All six cats became infected but showed no obvious clinical illness.

  • Three of the six ferrets became lethargic.

  • One ferret died four days after infection.

  • Infected cats and ferrets transmitted the virus to previously uninfected animals housed with them.

Lung Damage Could Occur Without Obvious Signs

A later pathological study infected four cats and four ferrets and examined their tissues four days later.

All eight animals developed diffuse alveolar damage associated with viral infection. The cats showed no outward lethargy or breathing difficulty despite having lung lesions. The ferrets became lethargic, and one died. Cats also developed inflammation within glands beneath the tracheal and bronchial lining. (Sage Journals)

This is clinically important because it shows that absence of visible illness does not always mean absence of respiratory pathology.

It is equally important not to overinterpret the findings. These animals were given a large experimental viral dose directly into the respiratory tract under laboratory conditions. That is very different from an ordinary pet living in a household.

Did Cats Spread SARS During the 2003 Human Outbreak?

Domestic cats living at Hong Kong’s Amoy Gardens complex, where a major human outbreak occurred, were reported to have become infected with SARS-CoV-1.

The most plausible explanation was that the cats acquired infection from infected people or from a heavily contaminated environment. No comparable evidence established pet ferrets as a meaningful part of the 2003 outbreak.

The practical interpretation is:

  • Cats were susceptible.

  • Animal-to-animal transmission was biologically possible.

  • Pet-to-human transmission remained unproven.

Why Are Ferrets Used in Coronavirus Research?

Ferrets are particularly useful for studying respiratory viruses because they can develop productive respiratory infection and transmit several human respiratory viruses efficiently.

In a later controlled experiment, both SARS-CoV-1 and SARS-CoV-2 travelled between ferrets housed more than one metre apart. The study confirmed infectious transmission through the experimental air pathway, although it could not separate small aerosols from larger droplets or contaminated material moving within the system. Ferrets are therefore useful for studying:

  • Respiratory transmission

  • Infection-control measures

  • Vaccines

  • Antiviral medication

  • Viral replication in the upper and lower airways

Being a useful laboratory model does not make domestic ferrets a known natural reservoir for SARS-CoV-1.

A laboratory animal may be selected precisely because researchers can reproduce infection under controlled conditions. That does not prove that the same species maintains the virus naturally or represents an important everyday source of human infection.

Do Cats and Ferrets Catch COVID-19?

Yes.

Cats and ferrets are susceptible to SARS-CoV-2, although the way the virus behaves differs between the species.

Cats

Experimental studies have shown that cats can:

  • Develop productive infection

  • Shed virus from the nose and mouth

  • Transmit infection to other cats

  • Remain asymptomatic or develop relatively mild illness

Can Cats or Ferrets Give COVID-19 to People?

The risk is considered low, but saying transmission is completely impossible would be too absolute.

CDC reports that most documented pet infections occurred after close contact with infected people. Pets are not considered to play a substantial role in community transmission. For an ordinary household:

  • A person with COVID-19 is much more likely to infect another person than to be infected by a pet.

  • An infected owner is more likely to pass SARS-CoV-2 to their cat or ferret than the pet is to pass it back.

What Signs Can SARS-Related Coronavirus Cause in Cats and Ferrets?

Many infected pets show no clinical signs.

When illness occurs, possible signs include:

  • Fever

  • Reduced appetite

  • Lethargy

  • Sneezing

  • Coughing

  • Nasal discharge

  • Eye discharge

  • Increased breathing effort

  • Vomiting

  • Diarrhoea

Low Risk

Your cat or ferret:

  • Is clinically normal

  • Has no known contact with an infected person

  • Is eating and behaving normally

  • Has no respiratory or gastrointestinal signs

What to do: No SARS testing or special treatment is needed. Continue ordinary veterinary care and hygiene.

Moderate Concern

Your household has COVID-19 and the pet develops:

  • Mild sneezing

  • Mild eye or nasal discharge

  • Slight appetite reduction

  • Mild lethargy

  • One episode of vomiting or loose stool

What to do: Limit close contact, keep the pet away from other animals and call your veterinarian. Do not arrive at the clinic without warning.

High Concern

Your pet has:

  • Persistent fever

  • Complete appetite loss

  • Progressive lethargy

  • Pneumonia

  • Heart failure
