Vet quick answer

A one-year-old cat is roughly 15 in human years and a two-year-old cat about 24; after that, add about four human years per cat year. A one-year-old dog is roughly 12–15 in human years and a two-year-old dog about 22–24. Older dogs diverge by expected adult size, so there is no accurate seven-to-one rule.

How it works

How dog years and cat years convert to human years

A puppy or kitten races through early development, then the comparison slows. Dog size also changes the later-life curve, so one fixed multiplier cannot describe a pet’s whole life.

01 / Early development

The first two years move quickly

Growth, social development and sexual maturity happen much faster than they do in people. Six months is therefore far more than “three-and-a-half human years.”

02 / Adult size

Dog ageing diverges later

After early adulthood, small dogs generally progress through the human-age analogy more slowly than large and giant dogs. Healthy expected adult size matters more than current weight.

03 / Clinical value

Life stage guides the care plan

Puppy or kitten, young adult, mature adult and senior are more useful veterinary categories than a precise-looking human-age number.

How to calculate pet years to human years

Start with chronological age, then use the species-specific pattern below. For dogs, choose the band that matches expected healthy adult weight—not a puppy’s current weight or an overweight adult’s scale reading.

How to convert dog years to human years

There is no universal dog-age formula. Dogs mature rapidly in the first two years; from then on, small dogs usually move through the analogy more slowly than large and giant dogs.

Choose small, medium, large or giant from expected healthy adult weight. The calculator linearly interpolates between these anchor values; results are educational comparisons, not biological-age tests or forecasts of health or lifespan.

Cat years to human years chart

The feline curve reaches roughly 15 human years at age one and 24 at age two, then adds about four human years per cat year. Indoor or outdoor lifestyle can affect health risks, but it does not change chronological age in this chart.

Frequently asked questions

Short answers to the questions pet owners most often ask about dog years, cat years and healthy ageing.

Is one dog year equal to seven human years?

No. Dogs develop very quickly in their first two years, then their rate through the analogy differs by expected adult size. Large and giant dogs generally age faster than small dogs later in life.

How do you calculate dog years to human years?

Use a size-banded curve rather than one multiplier. In this chart, one dog year is roughly 12–15 human years and two dog years roughly 22–24. After that, choose small, medium, large or giant using expected healthy adult weight; larger dogs generally move through the later-life comparison faster.

How do you calculate cat years to human years?

Count roughly 15 human years for a cat’s first year and 24 by the second year, then add about four human years for each additional cat year. The calculator also interpolates months between the chart’s yearly anchors.

How old is a one-year-old dog in human years?

A one-year-old dog is commonly estimated at roughly 12 to 15 human years, depending on adult size. It is a rough comparison, not a biological measurement.

How old is a one-year-old cat in human years?

A one-year-old cat is commonly estimated at about 15 human years. At two cat years the estimate is around 24, followed by about four human years for every additional cat year.

How old is a seven-year-old dog in human years?

Using the size-banded chart in this calculator, a seven-year-old dog is roughly 44 human years for a small dog, 47 for a medium dog, 50 for a large dog and 56 for a giant dog.

Does dog breed or adult size affect the conversion?

Yes, particularly later in life. This calculator uses expected healthy adult weight as a practical proxy for breed size. Breed, genetics and individual health still create variation, so the number should be read as a range-like analogy rather than a precise biological measurement.

When is a dog considered senior?

There is no single senior birthday for every dog. AAHA defines the senior stage as the final quarter of expected lifespan. As a practical guide, it often begins around 11 years in small dogs, 10 in medium dogs, 8 in large dogs and 7 in giant dogs, with breed and individual variation.

When is a cat considered senior?

The 2021 AAHA/AAFP feline life-stage framework places cats in the senior stage from around 10 years of age. Health needs still vary considerably between individual cats.

Does body condition change the age conversion?

No. Body condition, dental health, diagnosed disease and lifestyle do not add invented “human years” in this calculator. They are used only to personalise practical care priorities.

What if I do not know my pet’s exact age?

A veterinarian can often estimate a young animal’s age from dental eruption and development. In adults, tooth wear, eyes, coat, muscle and medical history provide only a broad estimate because disease and previous care affect those clues. Enter the midpoint of your vet’s range and treat the result as approximate. Cat owners can also read how vets estimate a cat’s age.

Can this calculator predict my pet’s lifespan?

No. The human-age number is an analogy, not a prognosis. Lifespan depends on breed, genetics, environment, health and care, and cannot be predicted from chronological age alone.

Age is only one part of preventive care. These free ASK A VET™ tools can help you assess nutrition, body condition, comfort and quality of life.

Methodology and clinical limitations

The calculator turns years and months into chronological age, then linearly interpolates between the exact size-banded canine or feline anchor values printed in the tables above. For dogs aged 16–20, it continues the final interval for the chosen size band; these oldest-age estimates are the least certain. The cat curve ends at 25 years. Human-age conversion is an educational convention, not a veterinary diagnostic standard.

Life-stage guidance follows the 2019 AAHA canine life-stage definitions and the 2021 AAHA/AAFP feline life-stage framework. Individual breed, genetics, health, environment and care create substantial variation, so this tool deliberately does not claim to calculate biological age or predict lifespan.
