Late-season fly control should begin with one question:
Which fly is actually causing the problem?
Horn flies live almost continuously on cattle and breed in fresh manure. Face flies spend much of their time away from cattle and briefly visit the eyes and muzzle. Stable flies bite mainly around the legs but develop in wet hay, spilled feed and decaying organic matter.

Horse Flies and Deer Flies
Horse and deer flies are much larger and spend only a short period on cattle while feeding.
Because they are powerful fliers, develop over large environmental areas and remain on the animal briefly, cost-effective population control is difficult. Repeated whole-herd insecticide treatment often provides limited benefit.
How Should You Count Flies?
Counting does not need to be perfect. It needs to be consistent enough to show whether fly pressure is below, near or well above the action threshold.
Counting Horn Flies
Examine at least 15 representative animals rather than the cleanest cow standing beside the ute.

Which Late-Season Control Methods Work?
Insecticide Ear Tags
Ear tags release insecticide gradually into the coat as the animal moves and grooms.

Stable flies, face flies and horn flies require different treatment placement and environmental control.
Automatically Replacing Ear Tags After 8 to 10 Weeks
Tag duration is product-specific. Re-tagging within the same season may be contrary to local extension recommendations and may increase resistance pressure.
Switching Brands but Keeping the Same Chemical Class
That is not meaningful resistance rotation.
Expecting Feed-Through Products To Kill Adult Flies
They act on developing larvae in manure and require time and adequate intake.
Using Ear Tags as the Main Stable Fly Treatment
Stable flies feed on the legs and breed in wet organic debris. Tags rarely solve the problem alone.
