Vaccine Guidelines for Dogs, Cats, Puppies & Kittens — Complete Vet Guide 2025 💉🐶🐱

Vaccines are one of the most important tools in preventive veterinary medicine. From protecting your new puppy or kitten to ensuring adult pets stay healthy, here’s everything you need to know about vaccination schedules, risks, and recommendations for 2025. 🐾💉

🍼 Why Do Puppies and Kittens Need a Series of Vaccines?

Newborn pets receive temporary immunity from their mother’s milk (colostrum). These maternal antibodies fade between 6 and 20 weeks of age—but until then, they can interfere with vaccines.

That’s why puppies and kittens are vaccinated every 2–4 weeks from 6–8 weeks old until 16–20 weeks—to ensure coverage when their maternal antibodies wear off. 📆

📅 Puppy & Kitten Vaccine Schedules (Typical)

🐶 Puppy Core Vaccines

  • ✔ DHPP (distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, parainfluenza)
  • ✔ Rabies

🐱 Kitten Core Vaccines

  • ✔ FVRCP (feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, panleukopenia)
  • ✔ Rabies

🧪 Non-core vaccines like FeLV, Leptospirosis, Bordetella, or Lyme are based on risk. Ask your vet for personalized recommendations. 🧬

🔁 Why Do Adult Pets Need Boosters?

Annual vs. 3-year boosters depend on the vaccine and location. Core vaccines for adult pets are usually given every 1–3 years based on:

  • 📍 Regional disease risk
  • 🐾 Pet’s lifestyle (indoor, outdoor, social)
  • 💉 Vaccine type (live, killed, recombinant)

🚫 Missed a booster? Don’t panic. Your vet may recommend restarting the series depending on the vaccine type.

🧬 What’s the Difference Between Live, Killed, and Recombinant Vaccines?

  • 🧫 Live vaccines: Stronger immune response, may not be safe for pregnant pets
  • 🦠 Killed vaccines: Safer but may need boosters or adjuvants (can cause reactions)
  • 🧬 Recombinant vaccines: Newest tech, high safety, low reaction risk

🧪 What Are Vaccine Titers?

Blood tests that measure antibody levels—used to check if your pet is still protected.

  • 📈 Costly and not available for all diseases
  • ❓ Titers don’t always correlate with full immunity

💬 Ask your vet if titer testing is right for your pet.

😿 Can Vaccines Cause Side Effects or Illness?

Mild symptoms like soreness, fever, or fatigue are normal. Rare side effects include:

  • 😾 Allergic reactions (facial swelling, hives)
  • 😿 Injection site sarcomas in cats (linked to adjuvanted vaccines)
  • 📉 Very rare immune or systemic complications

🚫 Avoid Vaccinating Pregnant Pets with Live Vaccines

Only use killed vaccines if absolutely necessary. Best practice is to wait until after birth. 🐕🐈‍⬛

💲 How to Vaccinate on a Budget

  • 🏥 Vet-offered low-cost clinics – Best for quality control and recordkeeping
  • 💉 Vaccination-only visits – Some clinics offer quick, exam-free shots
  • 📦 Pet insurance wellness plans – Reimburse vaccine costs annually

⚠️ DIY vaccines are discouraged due to storage, safety, legal issues, and improper technique risks.

🧾 Core vs. Non-Core Vaccines Explained

Dogs — Core:

  • ✔ DHPP
  • ✔ Rabies

Dogs — Non-Core:

  • 🦠 Leptospirosis
